I started out as a melee DPS in MMOs because that's what the main character in all the single player RPGs I played was. I never felt comfortable joining PUGs because I wasn't good mechanically. I was always doing gimmicky builds that turned me into a half tank so I could grind effectively by myself.
Eventually I decided I'd just give up on the power fantasy because I couldnt access half the content this way and went actual tank. I was pretty good at that but I was constantly anxious about having to take the lead in raids and getting yelled at if I fucked up.
Then I discovered LoL and since I'm too meek and passive to fight over roles I just decided to main the role that never got contested. I've played thousands of games as support since then over the course of 5 years and I still never got higher than Plat 3.
