It is so hit and miss... I feel like I need additional anxiety defense from a small dose of benzos or something but then why not take just the benzos and lose the side effects of the effexor.

I know.... but when I did take them I was very responsible with them. I began to use them as a crutch tho even a small dose in my pocket was nice to have to fall back on. It is escapism I guess in my experience the best way to overcome an anxiety attack is just endure it. When you have a way out in pill form in your pocket its hard not to take

where did you read that it's banned? that's ridiculous.
one of its effects is that it raises GABA, i'm not saying it IS a benzo, i'm just saying it work just as well as a benzo against anxiety for me. minus the hardcore withdraw.
