The image of the "guitar hero" stopped being marketable a few decades ago, to the point that even skilled guitarists on the scene today like John Mayer or Ed Sheeran are marketed based on their personal qualities instead of their technical skill.
I'm a normie and I like rock, but I tend to stick to bands I was into when I was younger for nostalgia purposes, since rock music is so limited that any new act sounds like the same old shit to me.

Personally I like where things are headed with electronic, combining some of the influences of rock and hip-hop themes which already had their time into a unique new hybrid genre of music. It will never be as good as either of those at their peak, but it's very appealing to the masses and doesn't have some of the more obnoxious features of either. It's very suited to the high-tech culture we live in now anyway.
