War has always sucked so much ass for anybody on or around the battlefield, and that first generation warfare would have been fucking nasty as shit. The older I get, the less I like the idea of going off to some random place in the middle of bumfuck nowhere with a bunch of boys in their teens/early 20's to run the risk of dying or being horribly mangled.
And you know what happens to veterans who are wounded/mangled/crippled in battle? They get returned to civilian life and then they get to be beggars if they don't have family who can take care of them. It's always been that way.
