How do you think the general population will react when we find life on other planets?
>>
>>28541491
We won't
>>
>>28541491
War against ourself and against the other planet.
>>
they will react in any way that will be fruitful for status jockeying. its what normies do. they dont have any real opinions on anything
>>
Irrelevant question since we either
-Won't ever find any other (not saying it doesnt exist but chances of finding it are nil)
Or
-Humanity will be vastly different when we do. Most likely in a post-singularity "society"
>>
I hope I can get a QT alien gf
>>
>>28541491
They can't be worse than the muslims.
>>
>>28541491
Same way niggers reacted when white's came over.
>>
A lot of people will kill themselves.

Not instantly, but billions of religious people will become extremely depressed once they realize life doesn't have an endgame.

Imagine the effect it would have on ministers who have dedicated their entire lives to preaching about nothing.
>>
They will post memes about it. I'm not even joking.

It would probably be a short segment mentioned in the news, between "fat lady sues McDonalds" and "this dog is getting millions on views on the internet. Stay tuned to find out why"
>>
>>28541491

Do you think the aliens would like anime?
>>
>>28541887
I don't know about that. They'll probably just say that god created them too or they'll claim it's demons and they are not to be trusted.
>>
>>28541802
It's a hypothetical question, you dip
>>
>>28541491
We'll find like microbes and shit. I don't think it'll have much impact.
>>
>>28541491
People would probably debate religion a lot more. Porn of the aliens would instantaneously be available on the internet. We'd invest a lot more money and effort into space programs.
>>
>>28541956
Were you ever actually religious before?

I was a Christian up until three years ago. I thought I was going to be a minister as well. When I realized I was wrong about God I nearly attempted suicide before a friend of mine contacted our high school's drug & abuse counselor for me.
>>
christianity will have to be re-written, so that we acknowledge that the lord jesus christ died for not only the sins of humanity, but also the sins of aliens as well, so that they might have a chance at eternal life as well if they accept him as lord and savior. i plan on going door to door to preach the good news to our new alien brothers.
>>
>>28541491
As in some some random single cell life form or an actual advanced species?
>>
>>28541887
Not at all. It would be brushed off as either "part of God's plan", ignored, or new religions would be made up by small groups.

I don't know why you're inclined to believe that devout religious people take scientific discovery to heart. The opposite is true more often than not.

Hell, even the Catholic church is ready to accept the fact that alien life could exist.
>>
>>28542091
I think he refers more to sentient beings.

People wouldn't care about single-cell organisms. The average person couldn't tell you what a mitochondria is and most likely calls bacteria "bugs."
>>
>>28542124
See
>>28542008

Those who rely heavily on religion truly view as a part of themselves. A discovery such as true extraterrestrial life would literally remove all purpose for many many people.
>>
>>28542155
Nigger, I spent the majority of my life as a Christian. When I lost my faith I didn't feel bad, I just accepted it and moved on. Not everyone is a feeble bitch like you.
>>

>>
>>28542008
I was raised in a religious family so I was in my childhood. I became a skeptical in my teens because of the same reason as you. I wasn't depressed about it to the point of suicide. In fact, I was relieved. I never liked the idea of a all powerful and all knowing deity (that I can't sense with any of my five senses) watching me and judging me. And a afterlife is just as bad, if not worse. I just want to sleep forever when I die t b h.
>>
>>28541491
Pretty fucking underwhelmed because it will be some nanoscopic rock crawlers.
>>
>>28541491
i think first we'd wanna kill it, then dependant upon whether it was sentient or not (though it doesn't really matter) we'd wanna eat it, then we'd wanna fuck it.
>>
>>28542182
Was it like an edgy "Jesus isn't real, my neckbeard says otherwise." or a "I lived my entire life expecting to share the teachings of a book to others and save lives through the methods I have, but due to seeing the truth through study all of my life so far has been wasted and I have no future whatsoever."

Because I was the latter.
>>
>>28541491
It'll be warcraft orcs vs humans
>>
>>28542155
No, no it wouldn't.

There is no reason aliens would disprove religion for anyone today, any more than finding Native Americans disproved religion for the conquistadors.

I don't think it would change anything, the normies are so caught up with their own little worlds that they wouldn't even give a shit.

I don't think religions would be impacted either, there are already loads of religious people who ignore literally every single ounce of scientific proof that no religion is real, I don't see why discovering life outside of Earth would change anything in their minds.
>>
>>28542399
How are aliens proof that religion isn't real?
>>
>>28542266
Yours, but instead of seeing it as wasted I acknowledged that it was false and then felt better in the fact that I was no longer believing in superstition.

You can stop trying to justify why you felt so shitty after leaving. Even in this thread there are people who were in the same boat as you and came out just fine.
>>
>>28542454
So you're telling me you legitimately studied to at least two hours a day. Lived your entire live fully devoted to your religion and even held out on various opportunities and experiences because of your beliefs. Your entire plan was centered on working in the church, nothing else. For all of it to crash down in one moment?
>>
>>28542435
Because all religions claim that Earth is all that there is in the universe and thus all life is confined to it.
>>
>>28542494
Yes. Devout Orthodox Christian and had plans to become a priest.

Are you going to keep trying to one up me on this?

>"This is how I felt, therefore everyone like me would feel the same after leaving their faith"
That's you.

http://www.space.com/16285-alien-life-discovery-religion-impact.html
>>
>>28542514
lolno, they don't.

The official Catholic position is that there may indeed be aliens out there, and if there are, God created them too.
>>
>>28542609
If you refered to your faith as "superstition" then you had no position attempting to become a priest.

You were truly wronging yourself.
>>
>>28542637
>"referred"
>past tense

No. I refer to it as superstition NOW. That's not to say that Christian values, like forgiveness, aren't valid.
>>
>>28542637
You argue like a child. I can see how coming to terms with opposing views might cripple your psyche.
>>
>>28541491
Who cares. The general population is massively fucking retarded. It's one of the things that annoys me most about life. All people have open access to the internet and all of human discovery since the beginning of time, and what do people do with it? They look up gay conspiracy memes and 9/11 troof and sit in a small circle of self-deluded ignorance, getting dumber by the fucking day. I fucking hate humanity and how predictably disappointing the average person acts on a daily basis.
>>
>>28542757
You explained your experience when you lost your faith that you "felt better in the fact that [you were] no longer believing in superstition." Implying you felt that way at the time.

I really don't think you were right in the choice to become a priest, but obviously that doesn't matter anymore.
>>
>>28542785
I honestly don't care how you feel about "how I argue". I literally could not give any less of a fuck.

I feel how I feel and I'm going to express that. If you have an issue with how I do it then you can fuck off.
>>
>>28542435
>>28542613
Almost every Christian I have ever talked to say that there is no life on other planets because "the bible doesn't say anything about it." The bible's silence on the issue of something so important as other life outside of earth seems to suggest that there is none, if you take only the bible's word for it. Why would the bible be completely silent on this topic if there was something else out there? That's the position most Christians take.

Of course, as soon as it happens, Christians will buy back everything they said and they will just say another stupid canned line such as "god works in mysterious ways" and call it a day. No matter how much contradictory evidence you show a Christian, they will never question their faith. They just move the goal posts or use cognitive dissonance to dismiss it all.
>>
>>28542816
No, it doesn't. Christ, you're autistic.

It's pointless talking to you but what else should I expect from a tripfag.

>>
I wonder if there are alien NEETS fantasizing with fucking humans.
>>
>>28541491
Well, normies would be surprised. Especially if they personally visited. Otherwise, humans are predisposed to start wars, so we would inevitably try to destroy the other race, which I can't say is bad. I want the human race to eventually conquer this galaxy, realising that the entire universe is actually a battlefiled. Then we would go and explore the entire universe, killing every single species we see, and eventually become the absolute rulers of this universe.
>>
probably destroy that shit too

They'll prep us with a bunch of media to get us acclimated to the ida over a decade or so. Movies and the like in the same vein as interstellar, for instance

The newer generations will openly embrace it
>>
>>28545939
*idea

Also I would want to be friends with one tbqh
Humans are hard to relate to
>>
>>28545939
That wouldn't be necessary. Anybody who would need that would just end up being the fringe conspiracy theorists that no one cares about or listens to
>>
>>28545939
>>28545961
Also I guess maybe this isn't related to your post but if we encountered aliums they would without a doubt enslave us, especially if they had flown to our planet. They would be more advanced than us and they would either not initiate contact at all since they wouldn't gain anything or enslave us if they need the workers (unlikely since they probably would have sentient robot workers)
>>
>trump is president in us when aliens are discovered
>demands we nuke them
>nuke gets sent into spess and will reach them long after the human race has perished
>>
>>28546002
Basically while it is inevitable for us to encounter advanced aliums, it won't happened until we ourselves develop either near light speed or FTL travel and have an unlimited amount of robot workers.

It just wouldn't make sense to contact aliums otherwise.
>>
>>28541887
once again, dumb fucks posting stupid shit to try to be famous tripfags
>>
>>28541841

We'll sell the aliens our prisoners?
>>
>>28541491
They'll think what the people on tv tell them to think. When speaking to others they will repeat what they heard people on tv say, but they will say it with a confidence that makes it seem like they came up with the idea.
>>
>>28541491

We won't, you moron!
>>
>>28541491
there would be people making a big deal about it for a short while and then everyone stops giving a fuck and continues onwards with their lives

even if they find a planet it will be so far away that theres not much point in wasting any energy thinking about it
>>
Huh? Life on other planets already found us in 1946 when they got our radar waves. They live among us. Why do you think technology has skyrocketed since around that time? The difference between 1600 and 1800 was almost nothing, but 1946 to 2016 is like a time warp.
>>
>>28547893
I never though about it like that. GG anon
>>
>>28541887
Why are you presuming that alien life is completely anathema to religion? It doesn't say in the bible "And God Created humans, not anyone else, okay? There's just humans in the universe, no aliens or anything else".

Same with evolution, it's not completely against the idea of a god, seeing as it's easy to assume that a god simply created simple life and guided it towards becoming what it is today.
>>
>>28542858
Because the Bible's the story of humans? It doesn't really talk much about cancer, or rare species of birds either, does that mean they don't exist? Nowhere does it state that Earth is the only life in the universe, hence the fact that the fucking Vatican (the most important Christian authority on earth) says that there absolutely could be aliens, and it's all part of gods creation.

>No matter how much contradictory evidence you show a Christian,

Because the nature of god is that he's not provable or disprovable via empirical studies, it's a theological issue, meaning philosophical debates (like aquinas's original mover) are much more useful.
>>
>>28547893
This is a good point. We already have the capability of interstellar space travel at our technology level if we mobilised for it. So why don't we? Because they already contacted us. They have similar technology levels to ours. What we have now is about as advanced as we or they will ever get, by limitation of physics.
