Generations always fear what's new but the next always takes it with almost an addicting level. My grandparents it was TV, my parents it was video games, my generation it looks to be the always online market.

VR is the next big thing. Today it's still in the "meh" phase, but soon we'll have 8K displays with touch interfaces and that will be the shit. It's not that far off.
Like home video and internet streaming, porn will be what drives sales in the beginning. It will wind up in every home.
Though I see more of an always-worn headset that's a combination of VR headset, HoloLens and Google Glass, in the form factor of a pair of "normal" looking glasses with adjustable opacity. Maybe in 2025 or 2030 for common mainstream use.

So, we have the technology for the headset and controllers, but we have 3 major issues before VR takes off at all.
1. Movement.
2. Price
3. Most importantly, quality software.
So if things stay the way they are, it will have just about as much as an effect as 3DTV's. In fact, Sony basically admitted that PSVR is a result of reusing old abandoned tech. (3D from their 3DTVs, motion sensing from PS Move)
Hopefully in every way.
I'm not entirely sure that it will, in the long term. So far, VR has amounted to Wagglan 2: Electric Boogaloo.
