The sidekick can be whoever you want. Basically though a fellow traveler, an orphan maybe who is a little bit older, has some street smarts, and who helps the protagonist out of a dangerous early encounter. Full backstory of this character to be revealed in mid to late chapters.

A light novel protagonist should be young, overpowered and surrounded by beautiful women. It's a power fantasy for losers. Like... how romance novels are for fat girls. Junk food reading. It's supposed to be a little trashy it's a guilty pleasure. Main Character's sidekick should be female obviously, as well as Best Girl. She's the romance interest that wins in the end. Then you display beautiful side characters with different character archetypes like Sexy Elf, Loli Race, Monster Girl etc. Fan service, romantic comedy, and good action are the main points for light novels.

The sidekick is a reluctant, self-serving rough type of anti-hero who has had a hard life, but deep down also has a good heart. Maybe they leave for awhile when they have a falling out with the protagonist in the middle chapters, but come back to help when it really counts.
