Having taken a defensive pistol class for my concealed carry permit we are supposed to de-escalate and disengage from any situation but should draw and shoot in a life threatening altercation. The instructors mentioned that people want to be a hero or believe they're invincible having some range time and carrying a weapon. They don't consider the aftermath - sued by the family of the person you shot, media villifying you for some agenda (george zimmern), etc. Nor do people consider that they may miss or fumble in a high stress situation which gets you killed.
