Norwegian prisons are nice (so I hear), but their jails (temporary lockup are shit).
You are in a concrete cell with a tiny, dim window that is high up. The bed is a concrete slab with a thin mattress. The door is solid metal. You're locked down for 24 hours a day. You can ask to take a shower, or get "fresh air". Fresh air is they take you to another concrete box of similar size to your cell with an open ceiling with a grill on it. There's a massive ashtray and it reeks of tobacco smoke.
You get two slices of bread, a little bit of butter on one slice, a slice of cheese and a slice of turkey ham. You get this 4 times a day as your meal with an option of tea or coffee with it.
Caribbean prisons (Jamaica and such) aren't bad because you get to smoke boom weed all day and eat good food.

Prison and jail are different things. The "prison is great in Norway/whatever country" meme is a stretch of the truth. I doubt any PRISON of any security level is like this. Jail might be though, because people are there for less time and for smaller offences. These are the people that aren't hardened criminals and can be helped to stop making dumb decisions and breaking the law is what I think the mentality is, but by the time you're in prison for 10 years for armed robbery the government doesn't care about you. Also, smaller countries can balance their funds differently than larger countries can like the US. Because of the population/density, there's probably a lot less jails needed, so you can make them nicer for the same cost of having to operate a larger number of them
