And if by "quite a while after" you mean roughly 100 years after his death? P52 is dated to 100-175CE. P104, P4 and P75 are also all from the end of the 2nd century. That would be considered relatively close to the actual events considering its age. And you have to keep in mind that these are just papyri we found, there might exist even older New Testament documents.

In my country when people want to be edgy and special they become religious. Most Americans seem to have an edgy period in high school when they aren't religious, only to revert back to some watered down version of christianity when they've grown up. I.e. Conforming to the societal norm.
