And you call that learning? If you actually was learning something, that would not happen, get back to learning or give up. Bakayaro
>>
That's how I felt the first few months like I was just aimlessly learning words but didn't have a clue how to put them together or make a sentence. Took me about 6 months before it all really came together.
>>
lol idiot
>>
You're not going to be fluent in 2 months. It takes most people at least a year or two before they can reliably read, write and talk to people.
>>
Hiragana and katakana are easy. Kanji is gay. Grammar is tricky at first, but after a while you kind of just get it.
>>
I've been learning for like two years and I can still hardly speak at all, and I can barely read the simplest comics while still failing to understand half of it.

I should probably kill myself.
>>
>>28431069
I've been learning for just over six months now,. I think one of the trickiest things about the language is that there's no spaces between words. Really fucks me up.

I did it for about 6 months, sidetracked from it with video games, tried again then realized that it is actually a waste of my time.

>>

I was pretty comfortable and able to read most visual novels doing 4-5 hours a day.

Start the kanji as soon as possible.
>>
Whatever you do OP, make sure you jump into kanji ASAP. Learn the radicals, download Anki, grab a premade deck, and do flashcards as often as possible.

A solid knowledge of kanji is essential for reading even comics, which is a hell of a lot more fun than learning from textbooks all the time.

I've been "learning" Japanese for quite a few years, and I felt completely lost in college classes for the first two because we focused almost solely on grammar and wantonly ran through random kanji with no rhyme or reason. Once I dropped traditional education and started studying on my own, I started making huge gains.
>>
>>28433041
Alright anon, imagine that you were Japanese.

You learn Engrish. Now tell me, do you also understand all the slang that you currently know, the accents you can understand which is already a bitch as a native English speaker sometimes, the different dialects? That is what made me give up on understanding moonrunes, I'll be like a dictionary who has no cultural background of the language I'm learning, a robot that knows the necessities and nothing else.
>>
I want to learn but I don't know where to even start. I know zero about Japanese, how it even works or anything. Babbie's introduction to nip pls
>>
>>28433415

Read something about Pareto distribution in language.

In English, 90% of everyday writing consists of around 1000-2000 words, and the average person uses far less in everyday speech.

I'd imagine a similar principle applies to Japanese. You might not know all the stuff, but you'll hardly need to for the vast majority of all the slang and other rare expressions. Nobody knows any language perfectly.

The same applies to culture. The average person doesn't really know much about his own culture either, so it's not that big of a deal.

>>28433743

tae kim's grammar guide is the best language guide that I know of in general.
>>
>>28431656
longer than that
in a year you'll most likely be speaking very very broken japanese and know about 25% of the shit you see in magazines and shows
after two years you'll mostly understand it but have really broken speech
I'd say to be really fluent it's going to take about 3-4 years no matter the language

hell, I took 5 years of spanish and I can barely understand when people talk to me
>>
why do poeple want to learn Japanese

>>
>>28433743
Read DJT intro guide.

Usually the steps are hiragana and katakana, then start learning some vocab and kanji and keep grinding. Read the basic grammar rules and advance steadily while you improve by reading a lot.

The process is nothing complicated, what's hard is the time and effort that you have to put on. I started two years ago, but what i've studied until now is worth only two months max.

You'll study for years upon years, and you still won't know shit. There are random idiots on the internet falsely extrapolating their experience studying baby languages like French and Spanish to learning Japanese. Never listen to them. If you're a native English speaker and you start learning in your late teens, it will take you about 10 to 15 years to call yourself fluent IF ever. And even then, there will still be a fuckton of shit you won't know. Your first goal should be to pass N1 in late 2018. If you fail that, make it happen by late 2019. If you fail again, then pic related.
>>
If you have the money the best thing to do is just to move to the country and take the plunge. I've racked up a few Asian languages just by living here and passively absorbing.

Start by reading Tae Kims guide to Japanese grammar. Download anki and the core 2k deck. It contains 2000 very common Japanese words in flashcard format. But before all that, memorise Hirigana and Katakana. You can learn those two in a week through grinding them into your long term memory.

Why would anyone want to learn any language?

Not all Japanese are xenophobic, and many are welcoming to westerners. I don't think foreigners should move to Japan permanently, and I myself wouldn't want to, but it's a nice place to visit.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy anime and manga in their original language, for someone who already enjoys them in English. Both are more enjoyable that way.

Any language is a potentially useful skill and Japanese can be an interesting challenge for native English speakers. It can be done by anyone, so long as you're willing to put in lots of time, and to never give up reading and listening, even when things don't quite make perfect sense. The experience of being able to think in a newly-acquired second language for the first time is mind-blowing and worth it.

Took me 2 years to pretty much get everything I could get from textbooks.

Now it's just pure experience based learning like play on words and accents and the more obscure vocabulary. Also just learning the language isn't enough, like you need to know the "in-jokes" and cultural aspects too. It's a forever ongoing process but I can read it so that's what matters.

I don't have anyone to talk to so actually learning how to talk naturally is probably the hardest thing. Like I know all the vocabulary, the sentence fillers, the proper structure but actually not sounding like a goon is pretty hard when you're just talking based on textbooks so most of my speaking skills actually come from eroge which I'm ashamed to admit but it seems to work.

I've just been reviewing stuff I know already to keep it fresh in my mind and playing pretty much only Japanese games, mainly just tons of eroge. Learning while I fap is the greatest thing.

They (generally) represent a consonant and a vowel together. Words are (in general) a few of them strung together.

there are exceptions though

Actually, I'm pretty sure that's only like 1/3 of the language I'm talking about, one or two of the 3 different writing systems
>>
>>28436293
Yeah, kinda
Like when I started speaking Spanish I would try to think of what I wanted to say in English and then translate. After a while, I didn't think about it in English, I could just formulate a response because my brain had made the connection with the words. If you study any speech-language pathology you see that the point where the brain stops trying to translate is the point where you really start to get the language. I still have some problems with writing because I usually try to be more articulate with writing and that's just a flaw of mine but yeah speaking it is really fun once you can stop thinking about it.

Been learning for two years now. honestly it takes a lot of willpower and you'll find yourself constantly frustrated, but you'll also have those "I can understand this moments" only to immediately have it crushed by the tons of material you will have to learn

No one can really give you a time table on when you'll be able to understand the language, my guess based on my experience is first year for basic grammar / kana /start kanji/ you will not be able to read much of anything most likely. second year, more advance grammar / kanji / vocab. you'll be able to read basic shit, but if you want to read manga you'll be glued to a dictionary. Again, i'm probably a retarded loser with a sub 50 iq so take it with a grain of salt.

There are three major writing systems in Japanese.

Hiragana and katakana are syllabaries. That is, each symbol represents the sound of a syllable. These on their own hold no inherent meaning and are used similar to the alphabet to construct words. Each symbol has one unique reading (except for a handful when used as grammar particles).

Kanji is a bit more complex. Each symbol has at least one meaning and reading. Most have readings that come from the original Chinese pronunciation and others that come from the Japanese pronunciation. Kanji can appear alone, with other kanji, or with hiragana.
