What fictional universe do you think is the best?

For me:

Warhammer 40k
A Song of Ice and Fire a close second

Damn those are my favorite universes as well.
Both universes are darker, expansive, moraly compex and farless goofy than typical popular normie universes like the MCU or star wars.
The only reason soiaf is popular is because a fantasy setting is considered less nerdy than by normalfags(lets face it, mainstream geeks subconcsiously abhor actual nerdy things) and even then most normalfags have barely scratched the surface of that universe.

I don't really get normies, when I was in high school, everyone did the 'zomg I'm such a nerd, I love Lord of the Rings and The Big Bang Theory', but me and the 3 other people that played 40k where considered weird and autistic.

Fuck those guys, it was fun as fuck to play.

Normies are only interested in interchararacter relations with simple moral conclusions at most and view things llike historical lore of the universe, factional relations and weapons and equipment as unimportant, therefore wierd(to the normalfag having a deeper interest in something means to them that you're somehow resorting to escapism and therefore inferior becuase since your're an escapist in their eyes you must have a shitty life).
Normies only something with which they ca relate to in real life. In such grand fictional universes they have little to relate to (since most stuff is impossible IRL) except character dialogue and they focus as a result only on that. That's because the main focus is relations between characters.
This is why the MCU, lotr and star wars and other "geeky" crap are popular to normies. These univeres are mainly centered around a group of characters with connections to eachother. This allows normies to appreciate it in some way("wow han solo kissed leia", legolas said * random bullshit* wow so smooth, "wow look how tony stark talks to hulk") and even then they never manage to fully appreciate siad universes(have a you seen a normie who cares about the SW EU or the targaryen conquest?). Thus WH40K will never be liked by normies is because of its grand scale based less upon characters and more on lore, politics, morals, inuniverse events and since its a based on a military tabletop game, weapons.

iktf man. At university, if I met someone who said they liked game of thrones, I would try and talk about the children of the forest and how they were going to be a big part of the next season. They never know what I'm talking about.

It's more D&D-like, but the whole story is so huge you get lost. Would recommend, it can be a bit heavy in certain places but the climaxes give me goosebumps.

Silent Hill has a nice universe. Twin Peaks. I'd like to be a neighbor in the Yotsuba universe. A universe that looked like the film 5 Centimeters Per Second would be great.

I kind of agree that 40k can be kind of like anime in that everyone is overpowered (pic related)

But It seems like most of the most powerful mortals are only powerful because of sheer numbers. eg, the Imperium's population is in the trillions, so a few hundreds of thousands of space marines, seems acceptable (to me at least).

Lord of the Rings has a lot of depth too it, many of the songs the characters sing are about past events with other people who have their own stories as well. Most people though couldn't care for all of the backstory. Its why the more casual video game players generally seem to prefer Fallout 4/3 to New Vegas but the more 'hardcore' players like New Vegas a lot more.

I had an idea for a 40k army

It would be an alliance of planets that have been ravished by war, and the civilian survivors of battles. This alliance of different civilian species form the People's Militia.

The aim of this militia is to defend those that can't defend themselves. They are few in number compared to the main armies. When two other armies are fighting in a civilian area, they strike in the confusion of battle, when both enemy sides are weak and vulnerable, to either push the fighting away or to protect civilians

Independent planets would send a levee to the militia and in exchange, the militia will protect that planet from any outside intervention from one of the main factions.

As expected of a militia, they use weapons seized from battle, and inspire liberated planets to join them. They are made up of a variety of species. However, they have a strict military code and are not dysfunctional like the orks.

They would be fun to make as models too, you could just chuck together whatever spare pieces you have to make a squad.
>>
>>28428973
It does help that New Vegas was just straight up a better game than 3 and 4.
>>
>>28429038
I agree, its just that what made New Vegas great was the depth of the factions and characters but people that are just getting back from the bars late at night don't really care too much about that and 3/4 are less dense and easier to absorb

Warhammer 40K definitely.

>ASOIAF

Fucking no, it's paper thin. It's just a vague retelling of medieval politics set in a roughly-similar-to-the-real-world map consisting of the most easily recognizable historical nations. The backstories don't mean much beyond house politics, they're just made up names tossed out for good measure. None of the creatures, settlements or gods are even vaguely original.

That said, ASOIAF is a rollicking good story, GRRMs strength certainly lies in family drama and political intrigue. It's just a shame that the world is so dull. There are so few fantastical elements in it (short of the 'rise of the undead' and 'return of magic' tropes) that it may as well just be set in our own world.

I'd probably say Warhammer 40k and Star Wars win it on sheer size and scope. They feel like universes where you could tell any kind of story and get away with it. Universes so huge you could just get utterly lost in them and never run out of material for new plots, places and people.

Lord of the Rinds is astoundingly in-depth and I'm a huge fan, but I don't get the 'huge' feeling I detailed above. It's like a finite universe that relies on the stories told within it. It's a mythology told beginning to end, where everything has it's purpose and place. I would be happy to let any writer, game dev or director throw shit at Star Wars or WH40k because the universe could just take it. Letting them muck with LOTR would be sacrilege.

You see the same phenomena with characters like Batman, the Doctor and a couple of others. You can throw anything at them because they just have so much scope.

Warhammer 40k, Mass Effect was pretty interesting alongside Dune.
Fallout is in the same praise, easily.

However for a more niche thing I really enjoyed the Violet Skies; it's made with the love of the readers and investors, with lore somewhere between Warhammer 40K and Mass Effect in terms of inspiration, and the genius decision to create a more marketable framework without 40K's really extensive intricacies.

The Wanderers remind me of the Tau and the Quarians, their trade fleet's technicians, and the whole thing with the Swift Wind Razor sector creating an economy around intergalactic theft was worked really well.

The decision to continue the war on the Organics, the civil conflict consistently failing from the Ravager worlds and their overwatch sector Archangel, and the 'ghost sectors' where the 'Quantum' time apparitions roam like lost souls; love it all.

The whole system-system synthetic purge the Organics went on, from Archangel's plans, reminded me a bit of Mass Effect's Reaper thing, and holy shit the Automatons became overpowered when they landed on the moons of Ravager worlds from the Wanderer trade fleet's fuck-up at the Cataclysm of Atus Field.
