We were never taught "PEMDAS" or any other acronyms. We were taught to evaluate exponents, parens, then left to right.
I'm not the only one who learned that order of operations, either. It doesn't invalidate PEMDAS (which makes sense http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/58237.html), nor does it mean how I was taught is stupid (we were told computers evaluate operations left-to-right unless superceded by exponents or parens, and that's what we needed to learn).
Either approach yields the appropriate answer *if the equation is represented unambiguously*...as it should be.
For example:
Via PEMDAS:
Division:
9-3/(1/3)+ 1 =
9-((3/1) / (1/3)) + 1 =
Then Addition:
9-(1+1)=
Then Subtraction:
9-2 = 7
Via LTR with equal operands (no idea what this is called):
9-3/(1/3)+1 =
6(1/3) + 1=
((6/1) / (1/3)) + 1 =
2 + 1 = 3
Obviously these two equations provide different results because of the different order of operations.
With the addition of a simple pair of parens, however, we remove the ambiguity:
9-(3 / (1/3)) + 1
9-1+1 = 9
See? Easy as pie.
