I didn't do either of these things and that's not what pursuing means. These are not necessary for women to have sex.
Some tips:
1. If you think you're too ugly for a gf and will be alone forever, the odds are really good that you aren't. Depends on what you're in to. The library or a bookstore is a classic choice. If you see a girl at a section of books you like, or if she picks up a book you've heard of you can approach her.
