I don't have a camera to take a photo of my old laptop.
It's my only and main PC as for now.
I see no point in upgrading unless I get something that's capable of running VMs.

Also,

It's time to move on, anon.
Vista is too old even for web browsing now.
You should consider some GNU+Linux distro with a light DE or even just a WM.
Chrome works well on GNU+Linux besides hardware-accelerated video playback, but you can use VLC or something to stream videos off internet if you need to.

I'm posting from a makeshift abomination of a HD-less netbook with an external display booted from a generic live Linux run from an ATA DVD drive, connected to the netbook via USB and powered by a separate, ancient desktop.

Be honest, how hard is it for a person to put together a computer with little to no experience.

My 6 year old budget pc is showing its age more and more everyday and i really need to just build a new pc. The only stuff that intimidates me is anything not hardware related, i know putting the physical hardware together is pretty straightforward its just everything else. I'm afraid i'll fuck something up software wise or fuck up the RAM/HDD.

I want that CPU in my next build.
It should be able to run TempleOS in a VM with that many cores.
I wonder how fast shit would compile on that if I ran Gentoo on it.

>My 6 year old budget pc is showing its age more and more everyday

No it's not, it's the modern top-heavy software showing its bloat. With the exception of making sensory arts, literally everything that defines a cultured person -- communicating, doing science, reading, viewing art -- could be done on decades' old hardware using established, plaintext standards such as e-mail. Prove ne wrong.
>>
>>28374633
I want to play modern video games on it.

It can hardly run them. Its showing its age.

>Linux
Never again senpai. Anyone can pick up OSX or Windows and change basic settings and get to work in a reasonable amount of time. Linux is just not fucking there.
Last time I tried installing even a a so-called leb tier easy version of Linux - Ubuntu it went like this:

>Get OS loaded no problem
>No driver for my ethernet adapter, sound or video
This is where it fails miserably and why the Linux community is only a bunch of nerds with masters degrees in CS and knowledge of programming languages
>Start looking for driver
>No simple driver executables exist in the Linux world. Everything from drivers to simples apps you have to download the "sourcecode" and "compile" it yourself.
I'm not a fucking programmer. After reading for 3 hours on how compilers works, coding your own drivers and editing app source to wor with your PC/distro combo I stopped suddenly once I realized how retarded this all was. All this BS just to get the fucking thing running barebones how OSX and Windows run right after an OS install.

Never again.

Arch worked much better for me than ubuntu.
Old kernel makes using a computer much harder because it doesn't support all of the hardware that newer version of Linux does.
Pretty much everything works for me without drivers, I just plug it in and it works right away except for my GPU.

But it takes time to learn how to set things up.

Average and even above average tech savvy users don't have time for all that shit. I'm sure linux is great when you have been programming and scripting all your life but windows does literally everything I need it to. Until they make that shit more user friendly no way I will go through that hell again just to be further held back by the lack of support for pretty much everything that most people use.

This.
SystemD sucks so much.
My computer isn't probably fast enough to compile programs every day, and I don't want to spend up setting my computer up from scratch.
I'm planning to move to Gentoo when I get a new computer.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

You condradict yourself.

You acknowledge browsing and playing as valid things to do, but not having a certain specific configuration, such as, I don't know, scripting some screen parametres depending on the app being run. You can't at the same time dismiss configuratibility and recompilability of software as 'needlessly' complicated while at the same time acknowledging certain hobbies as needs.

In other words, if I want to, I don't know, hack my WM/X/whatever so that a RDB keeps track of the English phrases in GUI apps on which my mouse hovers for more than five seconds, who are you to tell me it's pointless?

Wow, OP. You really freaked me out. I had exactly that combination of hardware--it was only the monitor that was different. It was like "How is /r9k/ able to see my hardware".

So, I guess the answer is "same as yours"
