About to rewatch NHK in the middle of a depressive episode, is this a good idea robots? Will Misaki save me?

Misaki friday? It's friday where I am.
>>
Great idea. Be sure to keep your gun/rope/knife close in case you want out.
>>
I've watched that anime I dunno how many times now. I lost count after 5 times. Always when I was depressed.
>>
>>28371151
>Will Misaki save me?

No just like she didn't save Satou. But re-watching it is a good idea maybe you can get the point that you missed last time, and it might help you.

>I've watched that anime I dunno how many times now. I lost count after 5 times. Always when I was depressed.

Same I always have a habit when I get drunk and depressed of pulling up some of the heavier episodes to watch before I pass out.

Watching NHK in a drunken depression truly is an experience,
>>
I wish I could fuck Misaki.
>>
>>28371302
While I do still recommend the novel since its fantastic, you don't really need it to understand that Misaki didn't save anybody or what her true intentions were. Its explained in the anime as well.
>>
>>28371151
No watching NHK only makes you feel worse if you're a depressed NEET
>>
>>28371151
>will Misaki save me?

You know she only made things worse for Sato, right? What saved him was Yamazaki forcing him to work and his parents cutting him off.
>>
>>28371151

NHK on a cold lonely friday night is the best
>>
>>28371302

Did anyone else notice how all the women in Sato's life were trying to manipulate him?

>Misaki: Literally everything she does up until the last 2 episodes
>Hitomi: tricks him into believing in conspiracy theories and basically gets him to attempt suicide (and that's just in the anime!)
>Whatsherface with the glasses: tricks him into joining that pyramid scheme

Not to mention that his only real friend is Yamazaki, a cyborg.
>>
>>28371462
>You know she only made things worse for Sato
because he was a fuckin normie. Any real shutins life would be significantly improved with a qt gf
>>
>>28371518
>because she was a fucking normie

No, she wasn't. She had no friends at all in the anime and never made any attempt at forming relationships with people other than Sato. And in the manga, she tries going back to high school and she's completely incapable of making friends.
>>
>>28371541
he was mate, hence why his life was not improved by having Misaki in it
>>
Misaki isn't real you faggots.

Crazy girls with borderline personality disorder who just want to keep someone they deem worthless around to make themselves feel better exist anon.
>>

Even if they do, they will never be interested in you.
>>
The best part was after the suicidepack arc when everyone else left with their family etc. and Sato just goes goes back to home alone.
>>
>because he was a fuckin normie. Any real shutins life would be significantly improved with a qt gf

She made things worse because she never had any intention of saving him retard. Her whole purpose was to just have him around since she wanted someone lower and more pathetic than herself, not because he was whatever arbitrary definition of a "normie"

Also if you think your life will improve from a "qt" then you really missed the point of NHK, really fucking hard.

So what? Even if she had no intention of saving him her being in a shutin's life wouldn't make that shutin's life worse. At best it's neutral, in reality having people around you significantly improves your life

>Even if they do, they will never be interested in you.

If they're interested in pathetic guys to make themselves feel better me or the average robot would be a good fir.

Misaki wasn't romantically interested in Satou she kept him around in the same vein as a stacy keeps her beta orbiter around, except she just wanted someone who was worthless and in her own words "no lower than a stray dog" so she would feel better about herself.

I really feel like crazy girls like this would exist, yeah certainly the romanticized version of her that most dumb robots who missed the point see doesn't exist, but the real Misaki who never intended to help anyone but herself is pretty realistic in my opinion.
>>
>>28371595

It's interesting to see what scenes had the biggest impact for different people. I have no idea why, but this scene where Misaki says nothing but positive stuff to him is depressing as hell for me:

I usually hate anime but this one's good. It's a great description of how a NEET feels, why one would become a NEET, why you would stay a NEET and how to stop being NEET.

Also really comfy. Probably comfiest show I've seen, I love the color scheme and music. Really good moral too; being a shut-in is a result of excess comfort.
>>
>>28371790

Of course not, and I'm happy that she won't. Misaki caused far more misery than happiness for Sato, what 'saved' him was his parents refusing to send him any more money.

watched it once back in 2012 when I was a depressed degenerate back in highschool and thought I'd turn out like him unless I changed my ways. For the next few years I tried to find something that matched the emotional intensity and power of that moment and it is only recently that I have begun to realise that i should be looking out to the world for that instead of in other people's stories. But I digress, you reckon it would be a good watch for me since then I've dropped out of uni twice and gonna start a tradie course in a few weeks might be the last time I'm NEET for a very long time. Posting OC Pepe I found
>>

You must be retarded or just have poor reading comprehension skills. I know no girl will save anyone because girls like that don't exist. But I feel like a mentally i'll girl manipulating a guy so she can have him around for her own selfish needs is pretty realistic.

Or are you one of the retards who actually thought Misaki wanted to save Satou?
>>
Reading the novel made me want to kill myself

It was pretty great though
>>
>>28371842

>wanted to save Satou

No, my point is, no girl is going to go all full Misaki mode and knock on your door and give you some great plan on how she's going to save you.

If you believe that, you are retarded.
>>
>>28371895
The point is that girls like her could exist sure they're not going to knock on your door but girls who manipulate guys for their own selfish needs whether if its just to make themselves feel less worthless are very real.

Of course no ones going to come knock at your door since its a story and that was just a setup for the story. But knocking at you door isn't what made Misaki Misaki, if that all you can see in her character you're retarded.
>>
>>28371151
if you are depressed, the don't watch NHK, TARD.

watch mushishi or some other comfy shit
>>
>>28371760
He never got better with her around, She was really manipulative to him and basically was giving him the opposite effect on purpose by making him dependent on her.

Its why she didn't save him and what saved him was when he ran out of money and almost starved to death and was forced to get a job.
>>
>>28371953
Also notice that satou didn't get that chance to get better until after he cut contact with Misaki.
>>
>>28371953
>He never got better with her around
right, because he was a normie, as I said
>>
>>28371953
It's less obvious in the anime but in the novel he gets a job and it changes nothing besides forcing him to leave the house to survive. He wasn't any happier and he still referred to himself the same way as before.

Ending up with a relationship with Misaki where both can be themselves without lying was probably the most helpful thing to happen to him
>>
>>28371936
Why? It's relateable and shit works out in the end. Even gives some good advice.
>>
>>28371895
>give you some great plan on how she's going to save you.

Misaki didn't either, really. She just stumbled through psychology and religion books that she barely understood because she's a high school dropout. Any real progress she helped Sato make was largely by accident and often backfired (like when she told him about Yamazaki's "girlfriend")
>>
>>28371998
>shit works out in the end

>only friend lives hundreds of miles away
>the girl he loves is married to a better man
>his only social contact is a mentally unstable 20-year old
>works a minimum wage job

Granted, he seems slightly happier than he was at the beginning (at least in the anime), but life generally still sucks for him
>>
>>28371973
That has nothing to do with being a normie you retard, it has to do with the fact that she was manipulative and purposely making him get worse, do you really think that couldn't happen to the average robot? Being taken advantage of by a "qt" and becoming completely dependent on her so you never try to get better.

Or do you think the average robot would just hop out and get a job the second a girl comes along, if you do you're retarded.

>>28371980
I've read the novel and both afterwards, and I know he doesn't get happier and he even mentions in the epilogue of the anime that he feels like nothings changed and that he can easily go back to that state.

by "save" i'm not referring to his happiness but him basically getting a job and "escaping his hikkomori ways" I really doubt Misaki or a job can make Satou happy, especially when he knows that she only wanted him around because hes so worthless.
>>
>>28372030
Yamazaki was a dick though. He looked down on Satou and only used him for his dumb dreams
>>
>>28372054
>Yamazaki was a dick though. He looked down on Satou and only used him for his dumb dreams

i dont think that is entirely true

he participated in pretty much all of Satou's plans, and even sees Satou as valuable

I dont get where "he looked down" on Satou at all. Telling someone they are fucking up, isnt looking down on them, considering he related to Satou in a lot of ways.
>>
>>28372054
>Yamazaki was a dick though

Sure, but he wasn't all that manipulative. Sato came to him in the first place and was pretty enthusiastic about the idea of making a game, so it's not like much manipulation was needed. He stopped Sato from jumping off of that cliff, got him out of the pyramid scheme, and basically forced him to go outside in broad daylight several times. But on the other hand, he did almost get Sato arrested for sexual harassment of minors. So maybe it evens out.
>>
>>28372054
>>28372091
If he anything part of him looked up to Satou after he tried to save him from bullies. Hell when they first meet again remember how happy Yamazaki was to see him.

Also I really doubt he used him, seriously with all the work Yamazaki did alone on their eroge he could of easily wrote a script on top of that. Also he gave Satou a choice in it he didn't force him or manipulate him to do it.
>>
>>28372111
>But on the other hand, he did almost get Sato arrested for sexual harassment of minors. So maybe it evens out

thats literally the robot in him, being cringy, and doing cringy things like we all do sometimes

he could have been arrested as well, he just ran IIRC
>>
>>28372127
>Hell when they first meet again remember how happy Yamazaki was to see him.

That goes away just hours later, though. Once he finds out that Sato is a NEET, his attitude changes pretty quickly.
>>
>>28372151
There's "cringy", and there's "trying to photograph the underwear of young girls". One of those things is embarrassing, the other can get you a serious fine and jail time (at least here, not sure how it works in Japan).
>>
>>28372151
Getting your friend into CP isn't normal cringy robot behavior
>>
>>28372159
You have a point, but thats mostly due to just Yamazakis anger issues not because he looks down on him.

If he looked down on him he wouldn't of been happy to see him in the first place.
>>
>>28372042
>That has nothing to do with being a normie you retard, it has to do with the fact that she was manipulative and purposely making him get worse, do you really think that couldn't happen to the average robot? so fucking what? Literally any kind of human interaction is a better alternate to being alone. Satou was a fucking normie who already had that and thus didn't get anything out of having Misaki in his life

>Satou was a fucking normie who already had that and thus didn't get anything out of having Misaki in his life.

With who? at the beginning of the show its implied that hes not spoken to anyone in 4 years. Him haveing Yamazaki around is just so you can have other characters and flesh them out not because "Satous not a trv neet" He was alone by himself for 4 years not speaking to know one out of pure paranoia and anxiety, not what i'd call a normie.

>thinks getting a job is the only thing to improve your life

Its like you didn't read my other post in response to the other anon. Misakis plan to "save" satou wasn't to make him happy but to make him "escape his hikkomori ways" ie leaving the house more ie getting a job. He could of been happy and a hikkomori but her plan was to make him escape being a hikkomori. Whats way to prove you've escaped being a hikkomori by getting a job.
>>

NHK is an important series for me because it reminds me just how close I became to being a hikki failure. Now I'm successful, if socially awkward with an enormous chip on my shoulder. I could have gone the other way, though probably would an hero before long.

>>
>>28372237
>he realizes he is in the same predicament he himself is in

Not even close. Yamazaki had been going to school for a couple of years up to that point, he had several previous girlfriends (who broke his heart, but still), he regularly attended social functions, he asked out that girl he had a crush on and went on a date with her...he and Sato were in a very different place. I agree that Yamazaki helps him out though, maybe because he feels like he owes Sato for being his friend back in high school.
>>
>>28372237
>actually, yes it is.

No, it isn't.

>My friend didnt know a thing about masturbation, or til I told him about it back in middle school.

Masturbation isn't illegal. Sexually harassing children absolutely is.
>>
>>28372216

Don't know what that has to do with being in college. Misaki shows that she has no idea what she's talking about several times, Sato actually knew more about it than she did (like with Freud). He just kept going to the counseling sessions for the same reason wealthy betas will pay to watch a girl struggle through a video game that they've beaten a dozen times.
>>
>>28373499

There aren't many good shows out there that deal with this desu.

Watamote is sort of close, but it's about a girl in hs so obviously the problems are very different from Sato's. Oregairu is supposedly about this, but the "problems" seem to mainly be some variation of "cute girl #1 thinks I'm going out with cute girl #2! However will I get myself out of this predicament, such is the life of a loner!". The problem is that anime is meant to provide an escape from shitty NEET life, so you're about as likely to find shows about being a NEET as you are to find shows about working in the HR department of a mid-size paper company in Tokyo.
>>
>>28373499
There isn't really anything else like it as far as anime goes, you could try Tatami galaxy not very robot-ish but still relatable at parts and very good.

Your best bet for more robot like stories is with manga though. None are as good as NHK in my opinion though.

Onanie Master Kurosawa
http://myanimelist.net/manga/8967/Onanie_Master_Kurosawa

Don't be put off by the premise this is a very good manga with a character similar to
Satou. Although Kurosawa is more cynical.

Chikan Otoko
http://myanimelist.net/manga/46282/Chikan_Otoko

From the same guy who did Kurosawa, this one isn't depressing or as series more of just a heartwarming love story of a robot finding love. Supposedly based on a real 2chan story. But its a funny and cute read.

Ressentiment
http://myanimelist.net/manga/1238/Ressentiment

This ones easier to relate to if you're older than Satou, mc is ugly as fuck to. Basically its the "bad side" that could come of if VR waifus were a real thing and perfect in every way.

Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge
http://myanimelist.net/manga/5674/Negative_Happy_Chainsaw_Edge

From the same author as the original NHK novel and manga. Not as good as NHK but woth a good read if you're interested in some of his other work. mc is basically a young satou.
>>
>>28373557

dawg, he realizes no one likes him, or Satou. thats the predicament I'm talking about. They have no allies. Except each other. Thats what makes them "in the same predicament". Yamazaki just has better fortune of being from a better family, and had better connections

>>28373583

>Sexually harassing children absolutely is

As someone who has had sex with a 14yr old before, you dont know what you are talking about. There is no "legal", or "illegal" lol

How would you feel if I told you they ask for it? like verbally?

I'm not saying creeping on school age girls in the bushes isn't creepy, but you are silly to assume sex is tied to age

>girl dates old fuck for sugardaddy reasons, no one cares/you go grrl
>guy dates young/younger girl, he is a pervert, and wrong
>>
This seems like a good place to ask:

Is Oyasumi Pun Pun worth reading? I plowed through the first couple of chapters but I'm not massively enjoying it at the moment.
>>
Even though the anime is old now, I think it would be cool if they released an OVA showing the lives of Satou, Yamazaki and Misaki years after the events of the anime.

The actual author of the novel and manga is a hikikomori. He said he almost escaped it by writing Welcome to the NHK but then fell back into being a hikki and isn't inspired to write anymore. So I think if they made an OVA where Satou ends up a hikikomori again years later it would be fitting. Yamazaki would be stoically but perhaps unhappily raising a family and working on his dairy farm. Misaki would be going to university studying psychology. Maybe they would both return to Tokyo to help Satou again.

Maybe it would be redundant but I would watch the fuck out of it.

I think that's questionable. Yamazaki was forced into a lifestyle he never chose and did not want. After another year I bet he'd be bored and exhausted from life on the ranch, especially once his wife stops pretending to be attracted to her otaku husband.

Hitomi's husband ends up saddled with a mentally ill, pharmaceutical-addicted wife, plus a child that will likely turn out the same way.

For Megumi's brother (the gamer) and Satou both, nothing has really been resolved in their life except they are now stuck working a series of minimum-wage jobs to survive. What do they really have to look forward to?

Meanwhile Hitomi has her wealthy husband and a child; Megumi is free from debt and obligation and the burden of her brother; and Misaki has gained the validation and support of a real relationship, through the "possession" of Satou that was her angle all along.

i think the whole point of the island arc was to show that everyones life sucks. even those females with "everything they wanted", although i think its self caused in a lot of ways. I know ways where its not their fault though. It also showed a younger man, and older man going through issues too

I'm not claiming to be the brightest, but i love discussing NHK because of stuff like this

>>28374509

Well I agree with you. I think Satou is gonna turn out better though, even if he is a bit dim
>>

>"If I died, would you be sad? Would you miss me?"

I just realized that none of Sato's Hitomi-related flashbacks are happy, except that one where it's implied that they fucked.

>yamazaki was forced into a lifestyle he never chose and did not want
he didn't really want to be a hentai game designer
he only needed to otaku it up in tokyo for a couple years to get it out of his system

It's true. I definitely agree Yamazaki fared the best of the male characters.

Dubs confirm this is a good idea.

Problem is I don't know how to get in touch with the creator (I don't know Japanese). But if it ever got to the stage of having a crowdfunding thing I would support it. I bet it could be done easily.

Anyone ITT speak Japanese enough to let the guy know there is interest in continuing NHK?
>>
>>28374802
He has tried to write again and again. It never works. He also has made it known that he thinks the novel is flawed.

Even if he tried, nothing would come out of it. Besides, an OVA is not going to add anything to the story at all.
>>
When did you realize

Misaki is never going to come and save you?

>tfw watamote is so good that I can't enjoy anything else
NHK was good too.
Maybe I should rewatch it too some day.
>>
>>28374835
Hmmm... I wonder who owns the rights to Welcome to the NHK? Maybe we could pitch the crowdfunding idea to the company, or the original author if he still owns the IP. Then someone else can write it but not me because I'm probably a worse choice than the original author anyway

Also can I get a link to his Twitter feed Famicom?
>>
Let's face it, the idea is nice on paper but it's generally a rather shit anime. All but 3 episodes are terrible filler. Pacing is nonexistent.

>one episode is serious and about suicide
>another one is about porn games
>another one is about pyramid schemes

Makes no sense. And while MC is relatable to a degree he is also a degenerate without a single aspiration in life. He doesn't want a gf, he doesn't want to be happy, he doesn't want anything. He is a nonexistent movie version of a robot, like what James Bond is to an average real life data analyst.
>>
>>28375337
>He doesn't want a gf, he doesn't want to be happy, he doesn't want anything

Well, that's me. So I found the character to be pretty credible myself.

Anyway my interpretation of the series is that it explores the kinds of challenges life throws at people and the various coping mechanisms they use in response. Satou's social anxiety and retreat to NEETdom is just one such combination (and the author's own, apparently, so it's natural the story is shown mostly from his perspective). The series as a whole is not really supposed to be about hikkikomori; that's just one example it uses.

Apart from the Misaki fantasy I thought the show managed a fairly realistic portrayal of the way life tends to go for people.
>>
>>28375542
While I understand what you mean, I think you are making it out to be way deeper than it was meant to be. Also I'm not saying that about MC in a bad way, I'm just saying it's not very believable, from my subjective standpoint that is, that there is a character who can't say "wouldn't life be much nicer if I had [insert random thing of any sorts]". As dead inside as you can get, there must be something you crave or just merely want. That kind of behavior and character doesn't stem only from neetdom and robot-lifestyle, it's affecting one's intelligence and all other kinds of fucked up shit.
>>
>>28375337
Read the novel it was based on. It leaves out side events like those. It generally is better than the anime and manga. Those two versions go over the top on a few occasions, although the anime is not very bad in that aspect.

If you think escaping a life style like that is as easy as "wanting to be happy" and "just being normal" I'm not even sure what exactly you are doing here.
>>
>>28375688
>If you think escaping a life style like that is as easy as "wanting to be happy" and "just being normal" I'm not even sure what exactly you are doing here.

I never said that. There are things I will never ever have, things that are relativelyu achievable to a common man too. And I can't have them. Still want them though.
>>
>>28375620
>As dead inside as you can get, there must be something you crave or just merely want

Well, I'm glad you find this hard to imagine. The situation you find so unrelatable is basically the very picture of clinical depression, which Satou is pretty clearly struggling with at the start of the anime.
>>
>>28375725
People with clinical depression don't indulge other people in all kinds of ways that MC indulged every single side-character in the show. Hence the lack of believable factor.

Which form would you guys rate best? Why does it go like novel > anime > manga?
>>
>>28377896
only seen the anime, so i cant compare.

is it worth reading the novel or manga? like give a mild spoiler if you could?
>>
>>28377896
>Why does it go like novel > anime > manga?
Because novel misaki is the nicest misaki, manga misaki is the meanest misaki and anime misaki is somewhere in the middle.
>>
>>28377923
You've got the novel which is pretty well written. I think it gives a more realistic display of the story. It leaves out side events like suicide island. On top of that some anime events are explained better (for example the talking tv stuff and the ending at the cliff). Character interaction feels more real and natural too. 250 pages, just read it.

The manga expanded upon the novel. Added more backstory for side characters and many more side events. Less realistic than novel and anime. Very different Misaki and more over the top.

Anime portrais the manga with normal Misaki. Adapts only like a third of the chapters. Reading the manga after watching the anime gives you a lot of new content. While the manga is the worst of the three, I still recommend it for that.
