$25/hr pouring coffee doesn't mean shit when renting a piece of a shit house costs $600 a week. You're talking $30k a year on rent for a house close-ish to a major city. Even if you work 40 hours a week at $25/hr (not uncommon) you're paying more than half your gross salary on rent.
Of course you can rent further out and pay $500 a week instead of $600 but then you've got an hour or more commute to work.
It's not good living in Australia unless you have rich parents who already give you free accommodation in the city.

you can rent a two bedroom apartment all to yourself for $600/wk, sharing a flat can be done for $250/wk easily in the middle of the city
while it is certainly expensive it is also one of the better economies in the world right now, and you're objectively better off here than throughout much of the rest of the world, even the developed world
