I have a character that one could consider to be my waifu, but I don't really get "serious" about it like I have seen other waifufags do, since at the end of the day the character is just a character, albeit one that that is one some level an idealistic manifestation of a soulmate/companion for me.
It was actually this partly that drove me to learn more about tulpamancy, but as I researched more I realized that creating a tulpa of mai waifu would not really be possible, since a tulpa is at the end of the day its own being and forcing it to conform to some character from a show can at best only produce a sophisticated servitor.
I don't know if I agree that waifuism/tulpamancy is akin to enlightenment, as I understand enlightenment to be overcoming "dissatisfaction"(suffering) that is inherent to the human condition. Creating a tulpa(in the waifu sense) doesn't solve that problem, it just provides a coping mechanism.
But I do agree that tulpamancy is not something everyone will get though. Personally while I'm still interested in the tulpa thing I don't know if I want to create a waifu tulpa as I find it very hard to delude myself with something like that.

I feel you. I was in the same boat until some time ago.
Here's some advice.
First step is to watch the two seasons and the movie of both K-On and Love Live.
Be aware of your own feelings, don't force romance even if you end up believing she's the one, or else there will be a time you regret it.
Make sure you've already gone trough the whole plot of the story, or else you risk being cucked by a Chinese cartoon, or being an active practicer of necrophilia.
This is just a wild guess, but maybe you just want to settle down, have company, not necessarily feel the most intense love ever. Just a girlfriend who you can live trouh life with. Loyalty, calm life and commitment. If this guess is right, think of characters who would want the same kind of thing, who would work towards the same kind of relationship.
And the most important thing is to not care about what others say about you and you're waifu, and follow your true feelings. This paragraph can over ride any of the previous paragraphs, really.
There are weekly threads on /a/, Wednesday Waifu threads, you could lurk there to learn more about the phenomenon.
