Ratings =/= quality. As said earlier, The Red Wedding jumped the show into mainstream popularity. Everyone was talking about it. So by Season 4 everyone had to watch it, hence the high ratings.

Now that my studies are over for the summer, I can actually get started on my backlog of literature, which includes The Brothers Karamazov, Notes From Underground, and The Idiot (I finished House of the Dead by the same author of the above three a couple of weeks ago).
