It's because a few decades ago they started letting people pick nominees. The democrats did it first and the Republicans quickly followed. Party elite used to pick nominees, for the most part.
Of course the only people who show up to do the picking are the ideological fringes and crazies of the party. Nominees have to play them. So it's been downhill ever since.
