Also something you may not have thought about is how the new political landscape effected the development of art. Study Soviet films and compare them to modern Russian movies for example. Also with a totalitarian US expect to see more gung ho action movies like Red Dawn and the Rambo sequels as opposed to intelligent ones like Robocop and stuff. Also study Nazi propaganda films. I feel like you have imagined a world in which pretty much everything bad that could have happened in the 90s did. Consider incorporating the CIA's activity in South America in the 80s into this.

In my alternate history the first difference is from the French in Algeria in the 1950's. Algeria remained a French colony for another 30 years and the French settler population there swelled. when Algeria eventually became independent and the French colonial regime collapsed white people went to other "white african" states instead of the unsympathethic new leftist French government, in this case South Africa (which is still apartheid), Rhodesia, and establishing via bribery a colony in Madagascar that quickly eclipses the black government and takes over the country.
Rhodesia itself was reestablished by a South African/German-backed coup in the 90's when they intervened to save the abused shrinking white population. But in truth there arent that many white rhodesians, it's dominated by Afrikaaner settlers and French exiles.
