Not really. I work on ethics and value theory and those subjects are essential, especially if you want a job. I just disagree with 99% of my class and professors.
What I don't like is that were I to voice my opinion I would have my reputation tarnished, which matters greatly in philosophy. Submitting a paper to conference that didn't follow the party line would be genuine professional suicide.

Ironically, what you said about regret is interesting, as Bernard Williams wanted to tie ethics at its coreto a sense of agent regret. In such a case, if Hitler really didn't feel regret we might not think about him having been bound by ethics at all. The fact he killed himself suggests he did, however.

I took it to mean that there is some force outside you that stops you from being immoral which I assumed to be other people (society), but as we know there are many cases when society fails to punish immoral acts.
Maybe Hitler's regret for not staying a painter, if he felt any, was caused by fear of death, therefore if the outside forces hadn't forced him to feel the fear he wouldn't ever feel the regret that is supposedly related to being guided by ethics. I'm pretty sure that Williams man had this kind of contradiction sorted though.
I fail to see how anything that I wrote is incoherent by r9k (layman) standards.
