Because you have been trained to do that roll and have been with the company at least a year to be able to qualify for maternity pay. You have a right to have that role kept for you. If you apply for a job that is temporarily or maternity cover, you should expect that the role won't be permanent. If you don't want a temp role, don't apply for one.

I don't understand what you expect women to do. I see hundreds of posts on this site about how lazy women are, how they choose to sponge off men. With maternity leave, it allows them to spend the formative months with their baby and allow them to have direct involvement with the child, knowing that they have a job to return to. They can keep their independence, there's less pressure on the man to support the entire family and it's usually only for a short period of time.

It's important that you understand how human society works. What the roles of parents are, what the physiological differences between men and women are etc.
The pay is not insignificant, it starts at 90% of regular pay and then goes to 90% or 140 quid a week (whichever is lower). That's a large amount to pay for nothing in return.
Yes. They've been trained, they've taken people's and the company's time and money to get to that level and then they leave for a large length of time. Now the company needs to train another person who can fill that role, and then to retrain the mother when she decides to return to work.
Women have plenty of options. They can take a week off to have a baby, sure, but if they're working then they can have their husband or pay a nanny to look after the baby. They could also try not being selfish and actually be a mother, spending the "formative months" (about 192 months, by the way) raising her child.
The point is that women take the piss. They are given an inch and they take a mile. Women shouldn't be paid for not working, they shouldn't be rewarded for fulfilling their role, they shouldn't have their slack picked up by coworkers or leaving a company in the shit.
If they want a career, don't have kids, focus on the career. It's simple.

I agree that women have options and many go for the easiest one (taking maternity leave for long periods) but the alternatives aren't exactly problem free. Having a nanny or child care is extremely expensive, not to mention that you tend to miss out on the bond that you build from being around your baby 24/7. Allowing your partner to care for the baby is a lovely idea but if he works, his employer is unlikely to allow him the leave to do so. This means taking less hours and less money, meaning you're in the same position.
It's definitely beneficial being a woman in the workplace and having the option of maternity leave, I'm not denying that. I just don't think it would be fair to remove this option completely.
Out of interest, do you feel the same way about people who have long term illnesses? I know it isn't the same as you choose to fall pregnant, you don't choose to develop an illness, but do you feel companies should end someone's contract when they develop some kind of chronic disease?

You don't get maternity leave for the whole pregnancy, only in the third trimester. The majority of it is when they've had the baby and there's really no excuse, physical or mental, that they should be off work.
