The pay is not insignificant, it starts at 90% of regular pay and then goes to 90% or 140 quid a week (whichever is lower). That's a large amount to pay for nothing in return.

Women have plenty of options. They can take a week off to have a baby, sure, but if they're working then they can have their husband or pay a nanny to look after the baby. They could also try not being selfish and actually be a mother, spending the "formative months" (about 192 months, by the way) raising her child.
