as a lifelong awkward person, sometimes the temptation for me is to just ramble. if i'm thinking about the next sentence, i don't have to dwell on how uncomfortable i am. so one thing i've had to learn to do is NOT TALK. it will feel weird if you're an autist or autist-leaning like me. just like eye contact can. but just let them talk, and consciously follow their words to the end of their statement. then DON'T TALK. wait a second or two to see if they continue. if they don't, then address what they said. sometimes i even use the phrase "that kinda goes back to what you said about ____." it just shows that you're listening. it establishes a connection. instead of a lecture.
