Multiplayer games did effectively kill gaming. They've taken over to such a ridiculous extent that basically nothing else gets released any more.
The fact is that, because the most popular games today are CS:GO, Dota/LoL, CoD, etc, gaming has effectively just become some kind of hobby/activity. Gaming = e-sports now. It's all about highly repetitive, formulaic games that can be practised for many hours at a time until mastery is reached. Games generally get one release and then are relentlessly updated for a decade or more, rather than actually having fresh new games released every few years.
You can see how it's all changed over the past 6 years or so. Take Valve, for instance. They used to release a new game every year or so, sometimes multiple in a year. They have the development capacity that they could have put out countless new games. Instead they just dedicate their entire workforce towards TF2 and Dota updates.
It sucks ass for anyone who actually enjoys single-player games, or for people who do enjoy multiplayer but don't want it to be the absolute centre of every game they play.
I gave up on video games because of this, and because of the fact that all my friends literally just want to play Dota or shitty MMOs all day and I find it so fucking boring. Trying to find new hobbies and things to do but it's very difficult when you're stuck with a friendship group still addicted to MOBAs.
