I used to have long hair. I hated every minute of it but I was just too depressed and apathetic to get a haircut. It's currently getting pretty long again because I still hate getting haircuts.
The only thing that came of it was one guy I knew who was in a band must have assumed I was into music and asked me to come to one of his shows. Everyone else just ignored it, although desu I didn't interact with many people while I had it.

I live in the US (Specifically Las Vegas, Nevada) and I have hair down to my chest. I guess it depends on who you are, what your face looks like, how well taken care of your hair looks and who's judging your look. The general consensus is that guys shouldn't have long hair, but the people who have this ideal aren't used to someone being different in this way and people often automatically hate what they don't understand, so they'll tell you to live your life in a way that makes THEM happy and comfortable. It's sucks that we still live in such a time period where this trivial thing still upsets people.
As for me, it's pretty rare for someone to treat me badly or give negative feedback on my hair. Most people don't even care and I get a lot of compliments. This one girl I know even got happy when I came into work with my hair down once.

I had long hair in high school, down to my nipples. There was this one senior who would always fuck with me during passing period. "Stupid emo freshie" is what he'd always call me from across the quad. At first I didn't care because sticks and stones. Then it just got so damn annoying I just really didn't want to hear it anymore. He called me from across the quad with all of his buddies so I dropped all my shit and got up in his face. I told him to give it a break or I'd smash his teeth in. He kinda just looked down at the ground at said he wouldn't hit a girl and left me alone after that
i used to like my hair long like pic related, but after cutting it i decided that it also looked good without the hassle of having long hair, and no i'm not talking about being bullied (are you in hs?) i'm talking about hairs on my food, cloggin the shower drain, being 80% blind on windy days, and also because it just requires more hygiene overall.
I got compliments when i had long hair and i liked how it looked too, i like curly hair on girls too so it was a win win, maybe i'll go back some day but for now short is ok for me.
I think everyone should let their hair grow at least once.
