When I was in pre-school, a fat kid made fun of me every day at recess. It went on for months and he got away with it because his mom worked at the school, and eventually it got sick of it and told my dad; he simply told me to stand up for myself. So that's what I did.

I'm 6'5" and the size and shape of a refrigerator, so when I was a kid my parents forbid me from ever raising my hand to another person. They said I was bigger than everyone else and could seriously hurt someone.
Then we moved next to the projects and I started getting beaten up. The beatings became worse and worse until I was getting beaten up every single day on the way to and from school, often with crowds of kids kicking me while I laid on the sidewalk curled in a ball. Eventually I required a police escort to and from school, driving behind me in a squad car.
My father asked me for a list of the kids who beat me up most often and invited them over for hot chocolate and cookies. He asked them why they beat me up and they said, "Because he doesn't snitch on us and he doesn't fight back, so why wouldn't we?"
That night my father, who had been an amateur boxer and a street scrapper, took me down to the basement and said, "You're going to learn how to fight."
I said, "I don't want to fight" -- so he punched me in the face.
I fell down crying and asked him why he hit me.
He said, "If you'd had your guard up, I couldn't have hit you. Put your hands up like this."
So I put my guard up and he punched me in the face again.
"If you'd had your guard up *properly*, I wouldn't have been able to hit you. Put your guard up."
And that's how I learned to fight. In time, I tracked down every kid who beat me up and kicked the shit out of them. The rule was, I didn't have to win every fight, but I had to get at least one good shot in so they'd think twice next time. If I didn't get one good hit in, my father would send me back out to find the kid and pick a fight.
In time, I learned to enjoy scrapping. I spent the 80s kicking the shit out of skinheads, and I became a union organizer and professional shit-disturber so I've gotten to spend my life continuing to take on bullies. Beating up bullies is great fun. Very satisfying.

In high school, I befriended him. We became best friends.
After graduation, we dormed together. Sophomore year, we got an apartment together. During that year, I inflicted psychological tortures on him. He had no idea it was me.
