This is pretty much true. Stuff like meetup don't cut it. Malls, flea markets, libraries, theme parks, and such could have cut it, but the Interwebz ruined it all.

They do exist, but they're scattered over different fields of interest. There are hackerspaces for people into STEM, there are seasonal workshops for people into arts and crafts, there are these cult-like organizations for people into spirituality/philosophy, and so on.
