I suppose it'd be possible go through etudes and the suzuki books alone, but you're not going to get very far without a teacher. Classical instrument have a very refined technique that you need to learn from the start to avoid picking up bad habits.
If you want to be self-taught just pick a guitar...
The only issue with the piano is that you can't play in orchestras or things like that.
The main difference between violin and piano is solo vs group as it is harder to find someone else to play with you with the piano.

Anyone have any tips on learning to play guitar if my interest is in actually learning to play proper music?
I don't want to learn chords or tabs and play faggy alt rock songs. I want to play classical guitar and shit, actually learn and read music. Ultimately I'd like the guitar to be a gateway to other instruments, or to appreciation of music theory and stuff.
But it's hard to search for, because everything assumes you want to be able to start playing simple songs immediately, or that your greatest aspiration is to sing Beatles songs badly.

I've been using alfreds all in one adult course book, I think it's quite popular. I just found a pdf of it online. It teaches theory and reading music and such too if you don't know that. If you do then just skip those pages. I am getting towards the end of book after a few months and getting bored of the songs on here so I'm looking up sheet music for beginner classical songs instead and learning those.

Pianist here. Woman are impressed by piano because of "muh fingers ;)" but the most efficient thing to do is forget the non-plebian instruments and learn guitar. Form a band, hell, play Wonderwall at a house party and the bishes will eat it up
