>Assume every customer is a barely functional retard

Retail general

>I've been a customer at this store for years!
>I deserve this item for free!
>>
>>28091746
Fuck I hate this. Had one guy claim he'd been comin for over 10 years. Store had only been open 7 and I'd been there for 5 of them. Had never once seen him.
>>
Is there a job for the unskilled that isn't as soul sucking as retail or as physically demanding as basic trades/construction?
>>
>>28092074
Do you think it depends on how soul sucking it is being directly related to how much time you spend with your boss (if he/she sucks)?
>>
>>28092587
Personally no, I rarely see my boss. Customers and having to feign happiness and being polite is what I find draining.
>>
>ask customer to obey rules
>customer goes out of their way to disobey rules

I don't even get angry anymore. Just disappointed.
>>
How do you deal with people treating you either like you aren't even a real personnel or like you don't know the inner workings and policies of your own store?

How often do you have to deal with people trying to get free shit?
>>
>>28092074
warehouse work.
literally just walk around all day moving boxes here or there and shipping orders, all while listening to music. comfiest job in existence.
>>
>>28092074
If I had to get a wagecuck job it would be driving something or operating machinery but you need to be skilled for that right?
>>
>>28092759

>How do you deal with people treating you either like you aren't even a real personnel or like you don't know the inner workings and policies of your own store?
I work next to a big public service building, so pretty often. I didn't think it meme'd like this, but it do.

>
How often do you have to deal with people trying to get free shit?
You're giving them too much credit, they stopped trying ages ago. I caught some faggot today that said with a straight face 'I didn't pay for it because I didn't want to'.
>>
>>28092781
How long until that is completely automated?
>>
>Work at a restaurant
>Counter has oil candle on it
>Retards constantly stick their nose in this scentless flame and then withdraw in shock as they discover that FIRE HOT!
>One guy stands in front of the candle
>Burns his fucking shirt off
>Asks for a refund because of this

Other story
>Someone asks a third party to buy takeaway food in "red sauce"
>restaurant has a shit tonne of red sauce foods
>have to guess
>30 mins later guy who sent innocent retard to buy the food storms in
>I ASKED FOR RED SAAAUUUUCCEEEE
>mad beyond belief, jumping up and down, smashing fists into counter, looks like the guy has legit anger issues
>I ask him to calm down and describe what he means by "red" sauce
>figure out that he wanted sweet and sour
>offer to switch the food since I'm a nice guy
>screams "NOOOOOOOOoooo" as he literally runs out of the restaurant
>>
>>28091545

Customer here.

What can I do to improve a retail worker's day?
>>
I really didn't mind retail.
In fact I liked it.
I worked in a grocery store and sure you'd sometimes get a weird customer or a bitch, but they added variety to my life. And getting to know the regulars almost gave me a sense of community.
The predictable jokes didn't get old for me, I appreciated people trying to be nice or make conversation.

ahahahahah I'm the complete opposite. I actually like interacting with people and doing work related shit at my own pace. It's just when my boss comes in he stresses everybody out and since I'm the newest person he takes it out all on me and shows me no respect. I just take it like a bitch though, can't be bothered to talk back.
>>
>>28092806
depends what kind of warehouse.
Amazon and misc distribution warehouses? Probably pretty soon.
But there are a vast multitude of goods that would be very costly to automate.
Especially if your warehouse does orders direct to sellers, instead of just distribution to retail stores like a walmart distribution center. Picking and packing is very difficult to automate.
>>

Man I can't stand customers trying to make small talk. I always try and talk back in a fun way and make an ass of myself

>Stocking the eggs
>Old Customer comes and sees me struggling to move a heavy carton with many eggs
>Laughs and says 'you lay them yourselves son?'
>realise he is making a joke, and that I should reciprocate
>'I-I can't lay THAT many eggs, I am not a centipede!'
>he doesn't laugh at me, so I decide to make a punchline
>'I'm a MILLIPEDE!'
>pretend to be a millipede and mime my hands in the air really quickly like I have 100 hands
>he doesn't laugh
>I go back to work and ignore him

Also I fucking hate secret customers. I have failed them before and will get fired if it happens again
>>
>>28092806
Yeah, automation is on my mind. I work in the warehouse for a courier company, driving forklifts and so forth. 3d printing, drones, and driver less vehicles are going to shake this industry to it's core. I think I may last longer than the couriers and truck drivers, but who knows? Hopefully automation will lead to a post scarcity society and I'll never have to work again.

Retail gestapo.

oh shit I had that in my store too.

They were basically people who rated how well each station did like did the cashier greet you/ask for your rewards card, or did this department of the store's employees come to you and ask you if you need any help.
>>
>>28093066
Someone from the store buys something and rates your customer service skills. in our store nobody cares if you pass or fail it's just a tick box thing
>>
>>28093066
people who are "paid" or compensated by your parent company through a contractor to go in and rate their customer experience.

So if you're a bitch to the wrong person or fail to uphold the corporate standards you fail your shop and get in trouble.
Most people are cool about it and just give you 5/5s but every now and then you get that fucking busybody who has nothing at all to do with her time and picks apart your fucking routine like you're a fucking guard of the tomb of the unknown soldier.
>>
>>28093066
People that get paid to shop at stores and judge them via reviews. They rate worker interactions too, so they'll call you out in the report for not smiling and greeting them as they walk past you when you're trying to get your job done. Stupid shit like that.

I stock shelves in a supermarket on Graveyard shift. Not a bad job in itself:being paid to exercise, enough solitude once you get your assignment for the night for indulging in audiobooks. And having days free means you can enjoy the daylight while 9 to 5ers are trapped, matinee theatres with noone to annoy you,and avoiding the idiot management and their scarey big bosses. You'll have to sleep through jackhammers, and you can't find a steak dinner at 8AM when you want one,but the worst part are the Night Shoppers.

You get mobs of teenage punks who ride around in the cripple carts like it was their own personal toy,and if they actually BUY anything its a miracle. You get the bums and crazies camping out where the coffeeshop is,sprawled on the table with their cartful of belongings, muttering and stinking. You get the shoplifters, regulars that smile at you as they rip you off, because it costs the company too much to prosecute them, and God forbid they get their "rights" violated if you dare chase them out. You see the carelessness of people who let frozen stuff rot on the shelves, things opened and half eaten, the biggest boxes of diapers torn to get a change for some mutants lil WIC welfare spawn, and sometimes the Dirty diaper is thrown on the shelf next to it.

I leave work fantasizing about putting tiny signs on the front doors declaring Martial Law upon entering, and bringing a much needed beating to these lovely folk. But the Security team is more interested in watching the workers, since firing US frees the company from paying benefits and pensions, while stealing is written off as a tax cut for loss.

Oh well...I can dream
K

I am not a warehouse worker anymore.
I also don't think it's important. Just difficult and not cost effective to automate. With little shit like smaller amazon orders maybe. But with bigger difficult packages and good it requires a human touch.

I'm a fulltime overnight stocker at a 24 hour walmart. Havent had nearly this terrible of experience, and the store is literally a fence away from the town "projects".

Then again I've seen a support manager call the cops on a homeless man for washing himself in our washroom. So many people know they dont tolerate shit.

Funny story is that 2 years ago, before I worked here, I was immediately escorted out of the store because I was wasted at 3 am chatting with a fat girl. Im almost positive we were actually having a conversation and it wasnt my shitface self creeping on her. But I think the manager caught on that I was wasting her time instead of stocking.

So yeah, maybe your stores management are liberals or something.

I hope you're aware that everyone with a real job looks down on you. I know I do. More so if it's a male cashier. Female cashiers are normal because women don't care about getting good jobs.

Doctor here. I used to be a cashier at Wal-Mart. I don't look down upon retail or Customer Service jobs at all. I pity them and empathize with them. They are smarter than you think, but they are having their souls sucked out of them for a thankless job at $9.00/hour. They have to put up with entitled and arrogant folks such as yourself, perform tasks that don't even fit their job description, and believe it or not, be aware of any shoplifters or receipt shoppers that try to steal or take advantage of the store. They have to keep an eye on counterfeit bills and checks. But nothing takes the cake from a whiny customer who thinks they know how to do their job better than them.

Apparently the manager asked all my coworkers if they wanted to do it, and when they all said no, she put me back there without asking )^:
>>
>>28094587
meh, let them bitch at you, you still control when they get their meat. Underestimate at first. it's easier to add weight than it is to take it away.
Also don't cut your hand off with the slicer thing.
Usually there's at least 2 people back there though? One stocking the packaged meats and one working the counter. If that's how your store works try to be the one stocking the packaged meats.
>>
>>28092859

I think it depends where in retail you work. I worked at a convenience store for a while, and it was a lot of fun. People were typically really friendly and social. A few even invited me to hang out with them (they'd never follow through if I texted them, but the invitation was nice at least). Then I worked at a grocery store and it was fucking miserable. Everyone's tired, angry, mean, and so demanding they'll start screaming over not getting a 10 cent discount.

For a pound of ground beef, I just grab a handful and see what it weighs, then take or add some depending on how close it is. Customers usually aren't picky and as long as it's close to a pound they'll give it the OK, so you won't have to be exact. There will probably be someone else in the meat dept who can give you a quick rundown of the basics, I doubt they would just toss you on untrained. Though it wouldn't surprise me.

The thing that annoys me most is when people ask where shit is

Like people walk through the door and immediately start asking where shit is

WHY DON'T YOU FUCKING USE YOUR EYES YOU PIECE OF SHIT THEIRS SIGNS EVERYWHERE.

Worst part is the item they're looking for is usually clearly on a sign like 5 feet away.

One time the store was being remodeled and our bread moved to isle 6. We posted a sign right at the entrance saying it's moved to isle 6. Still had people asking for the bread and commenting how it's bullshit and that they can't find anything during the remodel.
>>

Why not? Wageslaves cant do shit about it. They are used to being shat on and asking for more shit with a smile.

Man an express lane near the front door for 8 hours and tell me how skill-less they are having to micromanage the till, bagging, and all the idiots who try to squeak by with more than x number of items.

by the way, I'm in the tech industry, but worked retail while in college. It's the most excruciating shit ever, if only for the fact you're not allowed to catch a break. You have to clean your own conveyer belt so it doesn't end up a trichinosis melt-down. You have to be cordial or suffer reprimands from the floor managers. You have to be accurate with your transactions.

Honestly, the only reason the tech industry is "skilled labor" is because it requires a lot of abstract memorization and understanding logical concepts. Retail is more difficult, in my experience.

woah woah woah WHAT

Cashiers don't actually sit down over in the US? I'd actually be amazed if this is true. It seems pretty weird that they'd rather risk lawsuits over back injuries than just dish out $30 for a chair that'll last probably a good 7 years (i've seen some of the chairs in retail stores in my country, and they're pretty busted up, at least 4 years old). Of course most people won't have the money to sue the big corporations, but what about unions and labor departments? Surely they'll fix something up if they get enough complaints?

>>
>>28096107
Wow, that's great. Guess what, I also worked skill-less customer service jobs during college.

Yeah, it can be stressful, but that doesn't make it skilled work. Any monkey off the street can "man an express lane near the front of the door." It's only skilled when the average person off the street can't do your job.

And I have nothing against cashiers, stockers, or any other unskilled workers. But what I do have a problem with is when they think that they are so above having to have small talk with the customer or when they feel bothered having to explain something to the customer. It's literally their job.

one of my best friends worked at a burger king for a good 2 years. They quite literally have a clock that starts counting as soon as they order. Whenever we hung out and wanted to grab some food in the drive-through in the evening (where there's very few customers and very little food prepared), he'd tell me to park a little further up, since it'd stop their timer from counting down the time it'd take.

The basic gist is that they'd like to reduce the general time it takes to service a customer, both to reduce wait time, but also to increase customer satisfaction with their wait time. It might be stupid as fuck if they can't do anything about it, but that's retail for you.

I've scored some top gear gaming rigs for like $50 cause the person would rather buy a whole new thing than diagnose a $50 repair.

Business run on computers, from databases to work stations. Every business at some level needs a computer dude. And it scales well into a career. You're right. 1/3 of the store has its own section. Small animals, cat food, and toys. Literally the rest of it is dog food. The dog food section is so large that when you walk into ANY Petsmart store, you are staring it in the face.

>>28096085
It takes YOU two seconds because you have a familiarity with the store. Admittedly it's not hard to find dog food if you actually try looking, I accept and know firsthand that most people don't, but it doesn't absolve the facts that: a) when you're in an unfamiliar place it's very easy for any specific thing to blend into the backdrop, or as it may metaphorically be called, "hiding in plain sight"; and b) customer service is part of the fucking job. It's not that hard for one to swallow their ego and just point the person in the right direction, and do so without being smarmy young punk about it.

Speaking from experience, it's far easier to just leave your pride at the door and do the job correctly once you actually get over the mental hurdle of actually DOING it.

There was a crowbar that I was suppose to use to bring out 4 or 5 boxes of milk towards the area but everytime I used that it just made me spill milk all over the floor and my manager looked at me like a dumb fuck.

And the gloves were always fucking missing because the baggers would use them to grab ice and never put them back in place so always without fucking gloves.

It sucked and I'm glad I'm not there anymore. But now my back is all fucked up cause I'm an idiot who tried to work hard.

At least I won't be stuck in Pet Smart wondering where the dog food is.

Because it makes the the customers think the employees are lazy. I'm not even kidding, people get in trouble because they were talking to co-workers in ear shot of a customer in many stores.

Because you already worked there and know where it is? kek

And you look down on someone who hasn't worked there before

Indian customers. Indian customers are by far the worst. I've met people with actual, diagnosed autism who act less autistic than them.

We orient ourselves just fine, kid, we just have our mind on more important things than trying to figure out the way this podunk store is laid out. I know it seems like the whole world to your deadbeat self, but there's more to life than retail.

Whats the music like at the store you work at? I work at a Kroger and they play absolutely nothing from later than 1990.

Makes me want to kill myself when it gets slow and all you can hear are the same Stevie Wonder songs over and over again

Yeah, except sometimes product X is hidden somewhere in the back. Why would I spend time scavenging your whole store when there's someone in front who can literally tell me where to go in 2 seconds flat?

I know your time is worthless, but some of us have important things to deal with.

>>28096823
This. I'm the person who works at Petsmart. These people find it difficult to comprehend that someone who doesn't work there is able to find pet food on their own. Not even a specific type of food, just "dog food".

I honestly feel bad for them if they are this dysfunctional walking into every store. In fact, I'm going to help every person looking for "hurr durr dog food" because I'm going to assume they have literal mental handicaps.

I work at local soda factory/brewery.
I take care of the packing line where cans come to be packed. Most I do is keeping conveyor belts topped with cardboard bases for trays and packs, glu machine topped up and other part of the machine topped up with wrapping plastic
Then there's of course clearing up malfunctions and such which luckily are easy and safe to take care off since machine automatically shuts down when it detects a problem. Stuff like soda can fell down, wrong number of cans per package, machine skipped picking up cardboard base etc.
Then I get to cruise around on motorized pallet jacks to get stuff which is fun. Hardest thing so far has been learning starting and ending a new run for different product alone since there's lot to do - get specific packaging materials, set the machine up for new package if needed, set the conveyor belts before and after the machine, that rails are open/high enough/wide enough.

Can be bit exhausting since there's three shifts. First you do one five-day week of night shift from 10pm to 6am, then week of evening shift from 2pm to 10pm and then one week of morning shift from 6am to 2pm and then you start all over.

They probably will but I won't.

I like helping old people and fuck-ups because they won't judge me, but it's surprisingly common for teenage females to drop what they're doing to take a picture of me. I didn't even know I looked that bad, but apparently they like to make a spectacle of me and have a laugh with their friends.

Holy shit, no wonder you work at Taco Bell.

"Our speaker is having problems, can you please pull up to the window?"

"Thank you, please pull ahead and we'll bring your order out. Yep, just up there, thanks."

They are only briefly at your window, and no awkward fuss.

I loved working the meat counter
Worked at a stater bros (california only super market) and although I was one of the "new guys", I was the most competent meat clerk in the store
>some recovering addict tried to put a bone-in pork chop through the manager
>would get super pissed if you ask him to hurry up
>as I was helping some guy get some hot wings for a game, he decided that that was the perfect time to strike up a conversation with him in the middle of the order
>would constantly do dishes regardless of how many people are in line at the meat counter
>some kid whose dad knows one of the meat cutters constantly brags about getting a promotion before me even though I've worked in the store longer than he did. He only got the promotion because the meat cutter who was a friend of his dad's was asked to put in a good word for him

>>28097036
He doesn't work at Petsmart. I do. Is it really that difficult for you to understand every customer except you is capable of simple cognitive function when in a store?
>>
>>28097021
You do realize that some products are in the back of the store, right? If it's not dog food, it's cat food. Or pet toys. Or rodent items. Or whatever the fuck.

So when I come in to a new store, don't see the product at the front, it makes sense to ask an front-end employee (who I'd assume knows where shit is) where product X is, so I can just go get the product instead of wasting time and searching the store.

If they would ask for the products hidden somewhere in the store, that's not a retarded question. That isn't an issue.

Asking where dog food is in a pet store is a retarded question and they need to use their eyes.

>>28097206
There's a difference between capability and efficiency which I don't think you quite understand.

I am capable enough to do math in my head, but why would I when I have a calculator?

Same thing here. I could spend time walking the store to find what I want, but why would when there's an employee up front who knows the store like the back of his/her hand? Those extra few minutes add up.
>>
>>28097256
>No I just want to not deal with retards
Then go get a job that doesn't require you do deal with retarded customers. It's not my fault you have a job where one of the duties is something you don't like.

>I actually have other shit to get done in my day than to hold your hand because you're too lazy to read a sign.
I've never worked at Petsmart, but I'm guessing customer service is part of your duties.

>>
>>28091545
Do you guys get a lot of drunks? One time I was driving my dad around because he was drunk and he had me stop at the market so that we could pick up some... bananas at 10 PM. I really hate co-workers who 'show off' more than anyone else, because they fucking raise expectations across the entire store and make me look bad.

>Have Pakistani co-worker
>He loves his job because he is from a shithole
>He ALWAYS makes jokes to customers
>He showed me a few weeks ao that he has a notepad with EVERY item in the entire store
>We are a huge mega supermarket as well, so thousands of items
>Has a joke for every item that he has memorised
>a few examples I have seen
>Customer asks for dog food, so he pretends to walk his dog across the fucking store on a leash while leading them
>Stops if he sees me and pretends to pick me up while saying 'he poops everywhere'
>customer always laughs
>customer asks for M&M's
>He takes them to the CD's (because Eminem HAHAH) then apologises and runs to get M&M's for them
>customer asks for baking equipment
>he runs with them to the in store bakery and has a playfight with the baker then comes out acting hurt and says 'he isn't giving it up' and takes them to the actual section with that stuff

This is a problem. I am always being told 'be more like Inderpal'. Literally every day. The management actually put up a little chart in the staff area for everyone to rank how close they are to Inderpal. I am near the bottom.
