Before Islam, Muhammad was respected but he wasn't powerful. The Banu Hashim was a weaker clan as part of the main Quraysh tribe which controlled Makkah. Banu Umayya was much stronger and the Hashmites and the Banu Mutallib lost a great deal of power and wealth a couple decades before Muhammad's birth.
After he claimed that the Quraysh's gods were false and that they should only worship Allah, they began to ridicule him and stopped selling things to him. They also attempted to murder him on one occasion and then after they warred against him during his Madinan stage.
