It's different when it's a professional relationship with a tattooist. Many of them are licensed (some states require it), and they are people running businesses who want to make money. When they tattoo people they are more focused on their work than a person's body parts. They would be a really shitty artist otherwise.
Because it's a professional relationship, there's a level of trust and understanding, similar to what you might have with a doctor or masseuse.
