It depends on the person and how close we are. Most get about 8 seconds max at anything closer than 6 feet. Every foot further away gets an extra second or two. Then I look around for a few seconds and reconnect. Eye contact a shit
The first way I knew I was an Aspie is that I have a VERY difficult time looking people in the eye unless there are about 10 feet between us. Makes me uncomfortably self-conscious.

I never learned how to do eye contact.
But I'm not an autist so I tried recently and It was super duper easy.
However whenever I do it I ALWAYS have intrusive thoughts like:

I used to never look people in their eyes and instead stare at their mouth as they spoke so that I better understood what they were saying.
It wasn't until like grade 10 that someone pointed out that that wasn't normal. I make an effort now to look into people's eyes and it feels weird... produced pretty decent results the last 8 or so years though.

OP, look them in the eyes, if they're talking about something near you or near by you, look in that general direction for a bit then look back at them, don't stare too hard, if you make hand gestures while talking like me, move your eyes with them.
Real life conversation is too complicated.
