I think there's a legal grey area when you are making an artistic film instead of a pornographic work. The movie did see its share of controversy over what can be considered "artistic merit", and the general consensus is that the notion of artistic merit shielded it from legal consequences.

You didn't grow up in the city in the 90s. I was not really old enough to experience the shit that was in the film (still in elementary school in 1995) but I was definitely aware of it and I could relate to a lot of the film in general. People (older people, generally) couldn't understand the film at all and saw it as complete degenerate fiction but the truth hit me so fucking hard when I watched it, I can't help but feel that the film is shouting out about something real that people prefer to ignore for convenience's sake, and it takes a hit in the ratings because of it, but it doesn't make it any less correct in its depiction of aimless, neglected youth.
