there are two types of posters on /r9k/: shitposters and feels posters. the lives of both parties are probably indistinguishable, with many of them having normal social and professional lives and others not, and the posts of shitposters and feels posters may seem indistinguishable to those that are unfamiliar with /r9k/ culture. the difference between the two lies in the underlying content and motivations of their posts.
shitposters are not serious about anything posted on here, frequently post things that are contradict their true feelings in order to get responses, and are the ones that start threads like "fembot feels" threads.
feels posters are sincere about the things they post, they sincerely believe that their trivial problems are enough to merit claiming to have a bad life, and are the ones that make threads like /soc/ threads and unironically use terms like oneitis.
so, to answer your question, /r9k/ is a big joke to about half of its community, but the other half takes /r9k/ seriously and many of the opinions no here that may seem like jokes are the actual opinions of some of the posters.
