Ants.
I have an ant farm that I built out of a can, a bottle, a plastic box and some pvc tubing.
Cost me less than 10 bucks and I caught teh queen myself(Lasius niger).

I left out the top part and just connected the bottle to the a plastic box where I feed the ants.
It's very fun to watch them do their stuff and having your own colony of little insects busilyshuffling about while you're watching some anime is comfy.

>How do you catch queens?
You look up what kind of ant you want to keep. I recommend some local variety since they usually don't require any heating or shit like that.
Just look up a common ant in your area that is recommended for beginners and look up when they swarm and where. My Lasius niger for example swarm from june-september on hot days with high chances of rain.
I just walk around every day during that time and watch on sidewalks or meadows.
Queens are the big ants with wings you sometimes see in summer. Queens of one kind will usually swam snychronous across the same region. They also swarm with the male drones but those are smaller.
It's important to look for a Queen that has already shed her wings. This means she has been fertilized. If you catch one with wings you won't have fertilized eggs and no colony.
After that it really depends on the species but I just had them in a test tube with some water behind cotton and another piece of cotton ontop so that the ant only had little space. I kept her dark and she started laying the first eggs. Once she had workers I fed them a little and then put them into the basement over winter.
I've had them up here again since march. The colony is growing rapidly. It's great. They just need water, sugar water and insects like spiders or flies.
I'm working on a box collection. So far I have the box for my last laptop, microphone, earbuds, and glue. They're all still in shape but I can't decide whether I should collapse them and put the flat boxes in another box or leave them as boxes but it does take up a lot of space. Maybe I can put them inside each other like one of those Russian dolls.
