I studied Mandarin for 2 years, I became conversationally fluent, but I could still only read about 30 characters, and only write 5 or 6.
When I realised it would take me over a decade to read a newspaper or a restaurant menu i gave up on the language altogether.

i've studied mandarin for nine months and i can read about 200 characters without stopping to think about it. and my classes move fairly slow in terms of reading because they prioritise speaking and listening comprehension. after two years you should be well into the hundreds.
