Nirvanawhom, in the end, I have finally come to appreciatereally brought metal to an end for me. After the great Nirvana divide, metal has ceased to become socially necessary; instead, what we have are gimmicky, intolerable sub-genres that are all on extreme fringes. Metal can either be ploddingly slow (doom), have vocals like cookie-monster (death) or a goblin (black), be extremely cheesy and sound like a eunuch is singing (power), or incorporate unsavory other-elements (rap). Even the metal bands of old, like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, who have continued to release albums and seemingly always will, have totally toned down anything about their music that has had an edge, opting instead for more majestic, concept-type albums with a huge production but little innovation or that rawness which characterizes metal at its best (thrash, trad).
The revival thrash and trad metal bands are just that: a revival. They are not breaking new ground and are hardly socially necessary themselves. It seems that the place for metal-and, for that matter, rock music in general--has become absent from society. Gone are decades like the 80s where you will find admirable bands, albums, and songs from most of what you download; the 90s, too, had some great socially-necessary bands like Nirvana and Oasis, but what do we have now? Who are our great bands that will be remembered in 30 years? The Strokes? White Stripes?
I despair: Beatles-descended music is at its end. Maybe tomorrow we'll have our second Ramones...

There's a difference between nostalgia and objective approaches to art. I can appreciate a whole ton of art, but simply not what comes after 1991 or so; and yet I've admitted to you that I do like Nirvana and Oasis. The dearth of bands that are good is very apparent. I'm not biased. I just simply don't enjoy the emo, indie stylings of the present.

Your "weeds" are what metal is. Everything that you've listed is some gimmick, as I've already stated. True metal is exactly what you seem to despise--and that's fine, everyone has their own tastes, but it's telling that you're going to sit there and denigrate the great metal bands who represent the music and then tout up these modern posers who have to rely on some extreme trait in order to give something to their music.
For actual metal bands, they rely on quality songwriting to drive their music rather than gimmicks.
