Humans have (relatively speaking) long pregnancies, and pregnant women are at their physical limit when fully "with child" (usually after 28 weeks) along with their natural weakness, means they can't easily defend themselves or their children. Because of this, males need a mechanism to promote protecting the woman and therefore the child. That's where love comes in. Feelings of attachment ensure that if the partner is threatened, males are much more likely to defend them, sometimes even against incredible odds or enemies (for example a mountain lion).
The Egyptians seemed to have made a philosophical attempt to explain love with the story of the goddess Sekhmet. Sekhmet was a ferocious lion goddess who Ra told to maul the evil doers. She slaughtered them all and drank their blood. Problem is, she didn't stop there. She kept killing which meant innocent people were being devoured. Ra had to trick Sekhmet by giving her beer, made from red ochre so it looked like blood. Sekhmet was too drunk to eat anyone. When the day had passed Ra was able to cleanse Sekhmet and turn her into Hathor, the goddess of Love.
However, Ra said Hathor will be a curse upon the world with more power than Sekhmet ever had, "for all will know Love, and all shall be her victims."
The lesson here seems to be that love is a way to curtail violent impulses. You could argue that a degree of violence is necessary but when it is excessive then the innocent are hurt. Ra, the elder god, tricked violence, inebriated it, and was then able to reform it's passion as love. Love was the cure but is still itself a curse.

Love is part of soul magic. Along with luck and faith.
It's also essential for our species. We're tribal and all about social bonds. Love helps cement those bonds.
