You can't salvage Undertale. It was designed to be a normie shitfest from the start.
It's very shallow and doesn't have any underlying or hidden themes. The guy who made it really likes Earthbound and Mother, I get that, but Undertale has none of the nuances that these games had. I still enjoyed playing through it for what it's worth.

Unfortunately, but at the same time there was something about it that was kinda special, i dunno. I played the game before the shitstorm and the first people who played it where nothing like normies and you were able to have meaningful conversations about it.

Well, it's an amateur game. Even so i think it had it's special magic... I did the pacifist run and the game was like a redemption for me. I felt like i was cleansing myself from my mistakes and errors... It was mega comfy and actually brougt joy to my heart.
I also played mother 3 and in a sense it's better than undertale but the ending isn't as joyful and comfy as the one in undertale... Mother 3 was god-tier too and thank god it hasn't been ruined by normies... yet

Alright this is true. There's tons of lore actually but it's impossible to discover it all just by playing. It looks like many ideas simply didn't make it into the game and are now haunting the folder forever.
I just found it too straightforward I guess. The only big thing was the fighting mechanism and that was really well done. And that whole sob story about Asriel, I don't know. That felt really forced. I hope he doesn't become the next SANIC or something.

I think that the story about Asriel is well done and not forced.
What i really liked in the final battle against him was the moment where you rescue your friends by trigering their personal feelings while feeding yourself on hopes and dreams in order to keep alive.
In the end, alltogether redeem the monster who was lonely. I liked that message about how broken people are usually just lonely and bitter... and they can be saved
