I don't like anime anymore but I watched 300+ series, learned Japanese, worked in Japan for a bit, went to comiket, started illegally importing loli doujinshi into Canada and dropped out of college to watch more anime and read more manga before I decided to quit.

I was blown away when I started hanging out with Japanese exchange students and then went to Japan, it's like a different language.
It also made it a pain in the ass when I went to take Japanese for easy language credit last semester, and the professor insisted on all of us speaking and acting in a way that nobody fucking does in real life, probably because she was old and left Japan in the '70s. Who the fuck says "watakushi?"

Yeah, it's pretty pointless. I only did it because I'm trying to transfer to university and needed a language credit, so I figured I'd make life easy and take something I already knew a decent amount of.
There used to be one school that was actually good for Japanese here in LA, OSULA, which was a branch of a Japanese university. The "professors" were mostly grad students studying abroad and actually spoke and taught the language the way it's used in modern Japan. The classes were tiny and mostly full of people who needed to know Japanese for business instead of weebs, too. I learned most of my Japanese there and it was much closer than the class I just took, although obviously still overly formal and lacking slang. Sadly they closed the school, and they weren't an accredited university so it doesn't count for transfer credit.
