Happened ~6 months after the board's inception, broheim. There was no board to just be sad on so everyone came here because they were miserable and aware enough to identity the problems at hand.

When I first came here it was a place for lonely kids. People who spend all their time in front of the computer. I don't think we talked about virginity that much though.
"Beta as fuck" greentext stories were a meme hit for a while and got so popular that people started assuming that everyone was an actual beta instead of just having stupid moments. "Forever Alone" and similar things followed. 4chan has always had its fair share of losers and turds but they all kinda came over to this corner it seems when they heard the stories.
There was always some misogyny, pretty typical and innocuous 4chan stuff, but I remember it getting bad around the time people stopped calling each other arcanines.
Now that /r9k/ is more than half a decade old it has seen its users age too. There are people like me in the mid twenties who hung out here as lonely teens but grew up to be relatively normal adults (I'm still a diagnosed autist but I make do) and you have the people who never grew up at all or who succumbed to their mental illnesses. It makes for a weird polarized group.

IT was okay even when it was turning into a gangbang of whining. At least back then people weren't all "me me me me me", problems were laid out so others could relate and have input, no one mentioned if they were a man or a woman because no one cared.

I don't think there's anything wrong with /r9k/ serving as a place for people to vent and share feels. Some people here are seriously delusional but I think most users realize on some level that the posting here is a coping mechanism. /pol/ is pretty similar, people frustrated with current society take up and argue for viewpoints that most of them don't really agree with, but its a way to release stress and anger against society. 4chan has always been a place for outsiders where you were free to be as edgy as you want, and I think this is a healthy way to cope, and only a minority of people actually become seriously delusional.
