When things like the civil rights movement, or women's liberation came into play, there was plenty of resistance at first but then people caved in to accept it as a reality. Cis and trans (I believe) are scientific terms that we used in my organic chem class. In that class, they mainly referred to the orientation of the higher priority atom groups on each side of a double bond. If they both were orientated in the same direction then they were cis.
