Th8 here, just finishing my walls while I wait for TH9. Already got 32k DE so hopefully all my storages are full before the 8 days are up.
Max everything especially walls, if you think the dark crystal walls are bad wait till skulls. You want to get them out of the way or you will have 3 sets of walls at TH9, at least you can use elixir.
My base is anti-giant/hogs but can easily be 3 starred by mass dragons. Fortunately a lot of people give up on Dragons at TH8 as level 4 Hogs wreck shit.

DE farming isn't that hard, but it can be difficult to find 1k+ that you can easily take. Look for storages near the outside and level your Giants/Archers/Barbs first. When you get to TH8 level 4 hogs are amazing.

Just keep them, I've got 4 builders and sitting at 1500 towards my 5th. You can try go for Crystal to get another 250 gems, and Champion for 1000. You get plenty just from cheevos and clearing obstacles, don't waste them on boosts or anything else unless there is an event.
