Yo, so I've actually been to Japan a few times, with other people once and by myself once.
JR Pass is the shit.
Hit up Maguro Bito in Asakusa for bomb sushi with a ridiculously reasonable price tag, and check out one of the last showa-era parts of Tokyo while you're at it.
If you go to Kyoto, go to Nanzenji and make the hike up to Oku-no-in behind it, it's fucking amazing, like you're walking into a scene out of Inuyasha or Kenshin or some shit. Otherworldly as fuck, feels like some weird Yokai is gonna roll up on you at any moment.
Osaka is cool but kinda hard to do without a local.
Eat some Italian food while you're there. Sounds weird, but seriously, I've been all over the world and Japan's Italian food is closer to the real deal than anywhere else I've ever been.
Gion is really nice, and it's another really time warpy place.
The Kyoto Imperial Palace is OK, the Tokyo one is meh.
Go to Nakano if you're a weeb and the girl's down, and they also have some of the world's best vintage camera stores if you're into that kind of thing.
