Good link, I'm reading through it right now. I'm not OP but I've been looking for something like this because nobody ever taught me how to handle money. At this point I only care about money, not prestige or social status. I want to be independent.
I care about money quite a bit though.
Try and get work doing something you enjoy, then. It's not impossible, millions and millions of people work in a field they love. Obviously they're still generally unhappy, but at least they are fulfilled.

Well, it'll definitely help. I'm now FI, so I can tell you that it's an enormous amount of work. The principals are easy to understand, but it's hard and demoralizing to actually stick to it.

Embrace minimalism and work 3 days a week. 2 days if you can manage it. That will do a lot to alleviate the crushing depression of wage slavery.
If you have kids use every tool available from the government to provide for them rather than working 50 hours a week. Food stamps, welfare, etc. Take it all with no regrets.

The trick is to find work that lets you keep some of your mind intact. A job where every day is not the same old shit day after day.
People give teachers a lot of shit, but that's probably the easiest occupation to get into where you can still be "you". Especially if you are teaching at the college level. Even being a shitty community college professor sounds pretty great these days.
