Recently I've been seeing more people on the internet claiming their asexual and I'm really puzzled by it. What causes a human to lack a sex drive, are they being delusional? I thought it was our biological purpose to reproduce or at least act on our sexual desires.

Biological purpose stopped being a thing long time ago. Human psychology is the thing right now. That's why we humans are not animals.

In the same way that some people are gay, i.e. aren't attracted to women, some people just aren't attracted to women OR men. Biological purpose isn't the end-all be-all, otherwise people wouldn't procrastinate and sit on a computer since there's no biological need for it either.

A lot of people seem to use asexual to mean "I feel sexual desire, but choose not to act on it". There's already been a word that means that for centuries, "celibate". I don't know why we had to invent a new one.
If asexual just meant "feels no sexual desire" then that would be a useful word but it seems that only a tiny minority of people use it that way.

Also, I think of reproduction as admittance of failure as a living being. Organisms only reproduce because that's the only way their genetic code will survive. Even if you specifically take steps to ensure you don't produce offspring, taking part in such animalistic desires tells your body that you're trying to reproduce anyway.

What causes a person to be sexual?
Biologically speaking, asexuality isn't more damaging than homosexuality, and yet, there is good evidence for a biological component to homosexuality.
Asexuality for me, is the realization that masturbating twice a week in the shower frees up immense time and resources that would otherwise be spent trying to seduce a qt and keep her as my gf. My coworkers get hassled by their wives when we have to work late, they miss work for kids, they complain about the stupid expensive stuff their wives bought, they don't have free time. They haven't seen the newest movies, they don't play the newest games, they take care of their kids on the weekends.
I don't need a sexual partner or particularly want one. I don't watch pornography, and I find the whole process somewhat disgusting.
It's not everyone's preference, but it is mine.

Just because someone is asexual doesn't mean they don't want to have sex, or that they are not attracted to anyone.

Basically the word asexual is pointless because the waythey defined it only describes how someone feels on the inside, it has nothing to do with behavior or how someone desires/has relationships with others. When people say they're asexual it usually indicates a very low libido, a medical condition, or just a choice to abstain from all sexual contact. I doubt that anyone is truly asexual, but if you're dysfunctional enough you may find it better to be alone, to suppress or eliminate any desire for sex. It does exist, in a certain sense.

There are people who don't have sex drives. It can happen for a lot of reasons like genital malfunctions, brain malfunctions, medications they are on, and maybe some people are just born that way. AFAIK there isn't significant research about it.
I'm in a weird position where I don't want sex, but I don't know why. It's a mystery.

I don't have an urge for sex (but also severely depressed and experienced significant trauma from like 12 on, so I wonder if I were normal and had a normal life would I be more sexual). And I don't feel like I'm just making up a worldview so that it aligns with what's happened to me.
