Except those were still memes. The term memes was stolen from Dawkins to refer to a replicatable idea that evolves as it is shared. It was a fitting term and applied to a lot of OC 4chan was generating.
What you're referring to was the first big misconception about them, the idea that they were exclusively captioned image macros, that spawned things like advice dog.
The cancerous idea was perhaps trying to analyzes an inside joke into being a "meme" and trying to define things "as a meme" in a metaphysical analysis rather than just letting them be. Of course with time that cancer became a satirical joke in of itself which resulted in the kind of shit you see in /s4s/. People did that shit early on though, "Milhouse is a meme" shows that people were already annoyed with the "labeling" early on.
