Handmade backups only provide one set of data to rollback to. If you accidentally fuck up a file and back it up to your external hard drive then you're fucked. You should be using a periodic backup manager which stores multiple versions of the same file without using multiple times the space (Thanks to only needing to keep track of what changed).
Since it's automatic that means you'll never forget to backup.

You always render games on your GPU. That's not a good analogy at all. Aero renders your UI on your GPU, classic renders it in software, meaning your CPU.
