They tell you a lot more about the artist than a soulless reproduction that looks like it's straight out of one of your Japanese animes. The use of colour, strokes or even how the paint is literally thrown at a canvas tells a story, and in the end they have a timeless aesthetic value that will outlast the period pieces on the left.
If you want art that looks like your pretty european paintings look at some colonial American or Australian landscape paintings. I'm sure you'll find greater beauty and artistic depths in their use of light alone.
